Field Day

I don't know about your grade school experience, but I can clearly remember the day that I looked forward to most each and every school year...Field Day!!! No school work, just competitive fun! A chance to show the other classes who ruled the school! Woo hoo!!! That said, I wasn't going to miss Jaxon's first Field Day.
Baylor had the day off from preschool so I signed him up as a volunteer as well! As it turned out, he was the extra team mate they needed to even out some of the events. Baylor was THRILLED absolutely THRILLED to be able to participate. The kids really welcomed him as a team mate. It was so sweet!

There are definitely days when I question the decision to be a stay-at-home mom. Today wasn't one! Loved that I have the ability to be involved in my children's special activities and document the memories!

Budding Entrepreneurs

Check out the little entrepreneurs! Jaxon & his buddy Ethan teamed up for the Second Grade flea market. Each student or duo had to come up with a product to market to their peers. Jaxon & Ethan decided to sell tokens to play their Claw games that were stocked with candy, miniature versions of the arcade Claws. The line to play was 10 kids deep at times. Keep it up, boys! Your parents are counting on you for retirement funds!

Lettuce Entertain You

Something tells me that one day Jaxon will cringe in horror when he sees these videos. I, however, think they are delightful examples of grade school fun. The Second graders proudly presented their class musical presentations.
Jaxon was one of the lucky few to score a speaking part. The class follows up with a joyful rendition of "Letuce Entertain You!" Check him out!
The closing number was equally precious! Enjoy!

A Whole New World

Here it is! Our brand spanking new neighborhood elementary school! Jaxon is SOOOOOOO lucky!!! During construction, the neighborhood was buzzing with talk of what features and technology the new school would showcase. The school district decided to embrace Green Building Standards, and the school has state-of-the-art technology. As we took our tour at the grand opening ceremony, I was stunned & I do mean stunned by how nice the school is. It could easily pass for a college campus!
Jaxon and I listened as our guide pointed out eco-friendly features like the reflective roof that would help keep cooling costs at a minimum and the cooling system that works by forcing air over a massive block of ice. The cool air is then circulated throughout the school. AMAZING!
The school has several collection ponds incorporated into the landscaping that will be used to water the organic and hydroponic gardens. The gardens will be planted and maintained by the students, and any produce they yield will be served in the cafeteria. Ok, I'm impressed!
The media specialists are still labeling and categorizing the library materials. Their workload was dramatically reduced thanks to the absence of textbooks. That's right, the students don't have textbooks. Instead, the students will use iPads. Yes, you read that correctly! Each student will be issued an iPad for the school year. This will dramatically reduce paper & textbook expenses. Jaxon whole-heartedly approves of this decision!
Speaking of technology, the media center features a TV studio where the students will produce programs and broadcast morning news reports in place of boring old PA announcements.
The Art Studio is stocked with creative materials and even has a kiln for firing pottery! I'm hoping Jaxon (and eventually his 2 brothers) will create some true masterpieces!
The school is divided into pods for each grade level. Every pod has a multi-purpose common  space complete with community kitchen and computer stations. Smart screen technology was also incorporated. I'm telling you, I felt like I was touring a new community college not an elementary school!
In addition to the usual art, music, and PE classes, the students will have weekly classes in the LEGO Lab where they'll learn engineering principles. I think that last tidbit was the only thing to rival the iPad news. Those are the two key bits of information that Jaxon remembered from the tour. I, on the other hand, left the campus feeling overwhelmed by the knowledge that was swirling around in my head. Anh & I both attended private & public school growing up, but none of our collective experiences can hold a candle to the educational opportunities being presented to our children. I can honestly say that the scope is completely lost of these extremely fortunate children that will be attending the new school. As parents, we get it and will be forever grateful!

Character Counts

My boys aren't just cute. They're sweet & caring too! As their parents, we know this. We see it every day. However, it's not every day that others acknowledge they see it as well. So, it was especially touching to learn that Jaxon was voted for by his peers to receive a Character Counts award for Caring. That's my boy! He's got a heart of gold!

Giddy Up & Gallop

On your marks! Get set! GO! And, away the kids went galloping their hearts out to raise money for their school. I can proudly report that the 2nd annual Mustang Gallop Fun Run went off without a hitch, and Jaxon once again proved he is indeed the fastest kid in his class, possibly even the fastest kid in First Grade!
Jaxon lapped his class very early in the "race," and I use that term loosely because only to our extremely competitive son is The Gallop a true race. The volunteers and teachers running the show deemed everyone a "winner" simply for participating. That's not good enough for Jaxon. He has to be "the best."
Jaxon obviously lives by the "If you aren't first, you're last." mentality. Therefore, he gave The Gallop every thing he had, and the track was definitely more challenging this year. Last year, the race took place in front of the school on the paved blacktop. This year, the setting was more picturesque on the sports field behind the school, but the track was bigger making each lap more of a challenge.
Jaxon didn't seem to mind! He sprinted around the track without a care in the world. The idea of pacing himself wasn't an option. He was full-speed ahead the entire time, and even though he was a lap ahead of his closest competitor, Jaxon would push himself harder any time someone was in close proximity.
Once the buzzer sounded indicating their allotted time was up, the class made it's way to the sidelines to tally the laps. The kids received a bracelet for each lap they completed, and Jaxon waited anxiously as each of his classmates announced their total for the official record. In the end, Jaxon was victorious with 10 laps. Looks like he secured bragging rights for another year!
Whether Jaxon ran 2 laps or 10 laps had zero impact on the pride Anh and I felt in our hearts. Our little man and his competitive spirit always shines in our eyes. As parents, Anh and I love that Jaxon is never content to settle for "good enough" and always pushes himself to be the best regardless of whether it's racing or mastering math and spelling lessons. Our little over-achiever makes us proud just because he tries so damn hard!
Way to go, Jaxon! Keep up the strong work!

Bragging Rights

Today was overflowing with proud parent moments. Anh & I beamed as we looked over Baylor's first report card and learned he had earned straight G's for "Good," the highest grade possible in Preschool! The good news continued when later in the day Jaxon produced his first progress report of the year, and it was plastered with straight P's for "Progressing" Towards State Standards, the highest mark possible for First Graders! Anh and I produced TWO geniuses!!!

As if two glowing report cards weren't enough of a prize, we all piled into the car and headed to Jaxon's school Open House where the teacher continued to praise Jaxon for his positive attitude and hard work. Jaxon gave us a tour of his classroom learning centers, and when we reached the Reading Station his teacher, Mrs. A, came over to explain that the books are categorized into 4 levels of difficulty. Each child was tested at the beginning of the school year to determine their reading level, and Mrs. A whispered to us, "Jaxon scored very high!" Oh??? Good to know! I mean, we know that Jaxon reads well. He, now, reads the bedtime story to Anh after all, but I guess we didn't have a point of comparison. Like I said before, we've got TWO geniuses! I'll be crossing my fingers that the trend continues!

First Steps to First Grade

"Hello, young man! Have you seen my little boy???" That's what I think when I look at this picture. My little guy is now a FIRST GRADER! When did that happen? Where did the time go?Jaxon is now roaming the halls known as Trotter Trail at his elementary school. He's no longer in the segregated and protected section for Kindergartners who are often labeled as "babies" by the much older & wiser kids in grades 1-5. Ha!A few days before the start of the school year, we were invited to attend a school-wide Open House. That was when we learned Jaxon has been assigned to Mrs. D's First Grade classroom. Woo hoo! Evidently, Mrs. D is "the" teacher to have and others are quite disappointed to have missed out on the opportunity to be a part of her class. I'm quite certain that all of the teachers are wonderful and will do an outstanding job, but I will celebrate Jaxon's luck of being assigned to the best of the best!As it turns out, Mrs. D is equally excited to have Jaxon in her class. Apparently, Mrs. D is best friends with Jax's Kindergarten teacher Mrs. P, and Mrs. P ranted and raved about how wonderful Jaxon is to Mrs. D. Wow! School had not even started yet, and the love was flowing! Speaking of love, Jaxon's "girlfriend" and best buddy also scored a spot in Mrs. D's classroom. I know, Jax! She's not your girlfriend! You two just get all weird & super smiley when you're around each other. No big deal! Doesn't mean a thing!

Finally, Jaxon's big day had arrived, and he was beyond eager to get the show on the road. Having watched me make a huge fuss over Baylor's first day a week earlier, Jaxon was excited to see that his first day was equally important to me. He proudly posed for pictures and marched with enthusiasm to the bus stop a few doors down.
Jaxon is officially a BIG, BADASS First Grader and nothing is going to hold him back! I know this school year will yield all sorts of wonderful events, new friends, and exciting milestones. Jax will no doubt enjoy every second of the experience just as he did last year. I just hope it doesn't flash by in the blink of an eye. Hang on, Everybody! The whirlwind is picking up speed!

Graduation Day

Sing it with me...Schoooool's out for Summer!!! Woo hoo & where did the time go?!? Jaxon went from Kindergarten to First Grade in the blink of an eye! Okay...not really, but some days it feels like it.I'm so very proud of our sweet Jaxon and all that he has accomplished this school year. He made some wonderful friends, learned to read, and mastered his favorite subjects: P.E., recess, free time, and computers. Harvard, here he comes! My only disappointment is in the school's decision to not hold a graduation ceremony. I feel cheated out of a parental paparazzi moment. Boo! Instead, Jaxon's teacher Mrs. P invited all of the parents to Author's Night in her classroom. It was essentially an opportunity to highlight the students' work from throughout the year, and I can assure you, they have been very busy!

As a parent, I'm sort of sad to bid this introductory year farewell. Jaxon, however, cannot wait to officially be a First Grader. He has been counting down the days! Evidently, those big bad First Graders taunt the Kindergartners and call them "babies!" Hopefully, Jaxon won't inflict the same punishment on next year's freshmen. Something tells me that Jaxon will tackle this next school year as easily as he did Kindergarten. Let's hope his mommy can say the same. With Baylor starting preschool and Jaxon in First Grade, I'd say the odds of tears being shed on the first day are high, and I'm not talking about the boys!

And Then What...

Anh is currently out of town attending a conference. As a result, I'm a single parent for 48 hours. Fun! Not really. God bless the people that have to do play this role 24/7. It ain't easy! Truth be told, Anh just endured the same challenging role when I was enjoying a girls' trip to South Beach, and he somehow survived unscathed. Now, it's my turn to prove I'm SuperParent. So far so good! The boys haven't even asked about Anh yet. Ha! Maybe I am the favorite parent afterall! Not that it's a competition or anything (wink wink).

In fact, the boys and I have enjoyed some rather mature conversations for their age. Tonight at the dinner table, Jaxon told me that his school has preschool, Kindergarten, and first through fifth grade. Then, he told me he would move on to middle school followed by high school. A good sign, right?! Clearly, he's a motivated student. Jaxon then asked, "Mommy, what's next?" I answered, "College." He nodded and muttered, "Oh right." and then immediately asked, "And, then what?" As a "single parent" I have to play both roles. So, I channeled Anh with my response, "Well, if you want to be a doctor like Daddy, then you would go to medical school after college." Jax sat quietly for a moment and then said, "Okay, I'll be a doctor, but I want to play on the computer all day." Again, I channeled Anh and jokingly said, "Well, sounds like you want to be a radiologist then, buddy!"

Fast forward to bedtime, and it really shouldn't come as a surprise that Jaxon's last words to me tonight were, "Mommy, I want a real computer...and a Jayhawk cover for my iPhone." Before everyone gets all up-in-arms thinking, "That boy has an iPhone!" No, well....okay he kinda has an iPhone. It's my old iPhone and it doesn't have cell service. It's only for music and games. I know! I know! He better be a doctor or something that earns a heck of a lot of money because he's definitely become accustomed to a certain lifestyle. Luckily, he's still sweet and innocent and rarely shows signs of being spoiled even though he is. Let's hope he stays that way. On that note, it looks like we'll be computer shopping sooner than we expected. Hey, it's an investment in Jaxon's future, right? You've got to be computer savvy nowadays to succeed!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Introducing my Star Student! Jaxon was honored last week at school with a Character Counts Award for Respect. It's nice to know his parents aren't the only ones to recognize Jaxon's excellent behavior. The whole family was on hand to see Jaxon receive his award and acknowledgement, and the pride that Anh and I felt as his parents was overshadowed only by a little brother's love. Baylor took a seat right next to his big brother in the student section and cheered, "Good job, Jax!" as Jaxon's name was called. The pride was radiating off Baylor's face. As his mother, I pray that moment inspires him to turn the corner with the Terrible Two's behavior!Jax took his place on stage with the school's other honorees and briefly enjoyed the spotlight.Although, I'm fairly certain Jaxon enjoyed the post-ceremony reception complete with cake a lot more!

Tell Us How You Really Feel

Cel-Le-Bration Time, Come On! You know the tune! Sing it with me! Okay, I guess you'd like to be let in on the good news first. Ha! I had to find out from a third party (another parent) because Jaxon fails to tell me anything at all about his day regardless of the fact that I pretty much interrogate him for details. Apparently, the class bully Little Miss M is moving to Kentucky!

Jaxon's teacher, Mrs. P, shared the news with the class yesterday on M's last day. I'll paraphrase, but the other parent who was actually present for the big announcement said it went something like...

"Well, Class, I have an announcement. Today is M's last day because her family is moving to Kentucky, and we won't be able to see her anymore." Then, the entire class (except M) CHEERED and shouted "Woo hoo!!!!" I'm sure Mrs. P would have loved to join in the celebration, but she somehow kept a straight face and explained to everyone that it was actually a "sad" occasion and stated, "Everyone will miss M." Yeah right! I think the cheers prove that to be a white lie! Although, I really congratulate Mrs. P on taking the high road. I'm sure as the classroom door closed behind the last student after dismissal, she did a little dance. I know I would have!

SIX

Who turned six? No way, not my baby Jaxon! How is that even possible? Somebody stop the clock! Sure enough, that same precious baby has grown up into this sweet little boy, and as his parents, Anh and I did our best to make him the center of attention on his special day. Of course, our other little guy was doing his absolute best to steal the limelight or at least share in it.It felt like a bit of a cop-out after last year's celebration, but Anh and I decided to make things easier on ourselves this year and take the party to the kids rather than hosting a party at the house. Jax didn't seem to mind the scaled-back party plans. All eyes were on him even though one of his classmates shares the same birthday. Sorry, kid! It wasn't our intention to steal any of your thunder. At least you got some cake out of the deal.Speaking of the cake, Jaxon selected a Hot Wheels themed cake, and we requested that the racetrack resemble the number six in honor of the milestone. The birthday boy was thrilled with the outcome and made quick work of that candle!
As for gifts, we did things a bit backwards. Instead of showering the guest of honor with gifts we shared with our guests. Jax passed out car-themed party favors to all of his classmates, and to say they were excited would be putting it mildly. Cake & prizes at school?!? What a fabulous Monday! The party continued at home that evening. We couldn't let the leftover cupcakes go to waste! Although, we did implement a new theme...Transformers! Baylor found some giant Optimus Prime balloons that would work with the theme party #2, but in the end, he was hesitant to share. Ultimately, it worked out that Jax was allowed 1 balloon out of the bouquet of 5. Pretty fair, right? As always, Jaxon was a good sport and humored his somewhat selfish little brother. After all, who can argue with a kid that wanders the house saying, "I just love balloons!" You certainly do, Baylor, but you could share with your brother on his birthday!
The cupcakes weren't as pretty during round 2, but Jax and Baylor assured me they were just as tasty. That's all that matters, I guess.Well, that and the fact that Jax had a huge smile on his face from start to finish on his birthday.I wonder what Jax wished for? Maybe he wished for another magical year filled with promise and hope and all the wonderful things that life has to offer...or maybe that was just me. I can make a wish on his behalf, right? Surely, that's allowed. Now, to make sure it comes true...

Mom, Dad, and your entire extended family love you, Jaxon! Happy 6th Birthday!!!
