Graduation Day

Today, we watched the first of hopefully many graduation ceremonies for Baylor! Our baby is leaving preschool behind for Kindergarten! Whoa! Somebody hit pause on life's remote control! Posing with his buddy Ethan, Baylor enjoyed every second of the spot light.
He has never been a wallflower, and today, we saw our little entertainer shine on stage during the class performance. I seriously need to get this boy an agent! He is Hollywood bound!!!
Baylor, we really don't say it enough, but you are our shining star! You bring a joy & energy to each day. You're going to do amazing things in your lifetime!

Egg Hunt

The calm before the storm! Within seconds of snapping this picture, the kids took off running in every direction. At lightening speed, they swooped in and snatched what seemed like hundreds of Easter eggs scattered around the school playground. The laughter was infectious, and the smiles were more of a treat than the candy. Well, at least for the parents. I'm pretty sure the kids preferred the candy.
Baylor was so excited to have Jaxon there for the egg hunt. I had explained to Jaxon that he was merely a spectator for this hunt, but Baylor wanted his brother by his side as a "helper." Their bond is so sweet.
This kid didn't need the help! His basket was overflowing, but what fun is a basket of eggs if you don't have a brother to share it with?

Class Pictures

I would say that 99.9% of the time, Grant is completely uncooperative when I'm trying to take his picture. How in the world this photographer managed to get EIGHT babies to look at the camera all at the same time is beyond me! The result is truly priceless! Grant's first class picture is adorable!
Then, you've got big bad "Senior" Baylor in the 4-year old VPK program. Time is flying! So proud of the big boy Baylor is becoming!

Bottom & Top of the Totem Pole

It's that time of the year...BACK TO SCHOOL! Of course for some, it's a return to routine. For others, it's the start of a whole new adventure. Baylor was so excited to start VPK with his two teachers, Ms. Teresa & Ms. Laurie. He's the equivalent of a big, bad Senior this year!
Grant seemed a little nervous during his teacher meet & greet. I have no idea why. He'll be in excellent hands with Ms. Lisa, Ms. Dawn, & Ms. Peyton!
Check out the new backpack Grant will be sporting! He's got to carry his own gear: diapers, wipes, nap buddy!

It's hard not to laugh. He looks a bit like a turtle!
This year, the school adopted a uniform policy. Seems appropriate considering that it is a Catholic school. Baylor didn't seem to mind except for the shoes. He doesn't like the idea of all black tennis shoes because he insists they aren't "super fast." Apparently, flashy bright colors are required to be super fast. Oh well! All of the other kids will be hampered by the same slow black shoes. Surely, Baylor can manage.

Ok, this school picture is going to be pretty darn impossible to beat!
Looks like all the nerves are gone. It's going to be a GREAT year!!! Good luck, boys!!!

Carnival for a Cause

It's that time again...Time for annual school carnival! The entire city comes out to meet up with friends and enjoy the thrills of the Midway: rides, games, music, junk food, and fireworks. It's a guaranteed good time, and the fun benefits some incredible kids and dedicated teachers.
I enjoyed my time on the rides with the boys. While Jaxon is tall enough to ride alone, Baylor is still an inch or two shy of being parent-free. It's sort of sad to imagine that they'll be riding alone next year. Goodness, they're growing up fast! At least I don't have to worry about them boarding the super scary rides like these high-flying swings for a few more years!
Nope, for now, the biggest carnival-related worry is whether we can keep the goldfish that Jaxon won alive for more than 24 hours! Willing to give it a valiant effort, we stopped off at Walgreens on the way home hoping to pick up some fish flakes. Imagine our surprise to discover that Walgreens was complete sold out of all fish supplies. I guess we weren't the only "lucky" winners that evening!
Meet Zap...His days are numbered, but so far he's proving to be a fighter. He survived the first night in this bowl filled with bottled water. For food, he had to settle for bits of hotdog bun since there was a shortage of fish flakes. Maybe he'll amaze us and be a survivor...
Remember those swings? Yeah, Aunt Kelly joined us during our second day at the carnival, and somehow, she convinced me to ride them. I was terrified! It's not the ride itself that is scary. It's the thought that you're life depends on the carnie that assembled the ride. You have to trust that he was competent and sober when he did it. Otherwise, you'll go flying through the air to your death. If you've ever seen a carnie, you know what I'm talking about!
After the swing experience, I swore off carnival rides that soar more than 2 feet off the ground. I value my life! Besides, the real fun is having Jaxon or Baylor by your side. Their smiles and laughter are thrilling enough.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

It isn't every day that you're invited to a celebrity birthday party. So when the opportunity presents itself, you GO! Baylor, Grant, and I gathered with the rest of Baylor's 3-year old preschool class to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday with a very special guest...The Cat In The Hat!!!Most of the kids were shocked to see one of their storybook characters enter their classroom. I say "most" because as you can clearly see, not everyone was impressed. Give him a few years!Baylor was all smiles as The Cat In The Hat read the class one of his stories and then handed out treats. Afterwards, the kids were able to visit five activity stations themed after the guest of honor's books. It was a fun and exciting day for all...Okay...MOST!Thanks for letting us share it with you, Baylor!

The World According to Baylor

I just had to share the Daily Report that Baylor's teacher sent home earlier this month. It was Baylor's first day back at school after bringing Grant home from the hospital, and I'm certain that Ms. J was anxious to hear all about Baylor's new role as a big brother. From the report below, it looks like Baylor naturally possesses one of the most important skills associated with being a big brother...the ability to embarrass your younger sibling!

Costume Chaos

What scares you most on Halloween? Monsters? Witches? Evil spirits? Nope. A preschool Halloween party! Ekkkkkk! A classroom full of little kids hopped up on sugar, losing their minds and all sense of control. That's what sends my pulse skyrocketing! BUT, it's also a lot of fun and nothing was going to keep me from attending Baylor's class party. Sanity is way over-rated!I'm not sure whether it was coordinated, but Baylor's best buddy Gabriel was also dressed as Darth Vader. The evil twins seemed quite pleased with their matching costumes and together vowed to crush anyone that posed a threat to the power. Looks like Buzz Lightyear might want to watch out!
Both Ms. J and Ms. S, Baylor's teachers, deserve a lot of credit for dedication to early education. I don't know how they do it, to be quite honest. Now, granted their typical day is hopefully a little less chaotic, but I still doubt I'd last a week in that environment. Let's just say, I take their requests to have Baylor in class 5 days a week rather than 3 as quite the compliment. There were a handful of kids in that class that I'm certain they would be delighted to see less of on a weekly basis. What a relief to know that my little man doesn't fall in that category!
Ms. J and Ms. S actually make corralling that many 3-year old years look easy. They never broke a sweat once during the 3-hour party, and if they were ever flustered, they hid it well. That was definitely not the case for the majority of the parents. I'd say half looked ready for a drink by the 60-minute mark, and the other half were plotting their discreet exit about an hour later. There were only a 2 other die-hards like me that lasted the entire party. Yes, I think I deserve a medal, and Ms. J & Ms. S clearly deserve sainthood.
Snack time was surprisingly healthy and even more shockingly...the kids actually ate the food! Who knew?! Oh, and Ms. J and Ms. S weren't kidding when they announced at the beginning of the year that cupcakes are a forbidden food in their classroom. One mom brought in 2 dozen "Martha Stewart-esque" cupcakes, and they sat in their container untouched for the duration of the party. Apparently, cupcakes are tasty but result in a colossal mess. Even saints have their limits!
Snack time was followed by arts & crafts stations which involved all the parents. I was lucky enough to be assigned to the Ghost Station which involved bottles of craft glue (Yay!) and tissue paper, and wouldn't you know it, we were lucky enough to be stationed directly under the classroom ceiling fan. Flying tissue paper EVERYWHERE, and no matter how many times you try to explain to a 3-year old that less-is-more when it comes to glue, they just don't get it! Fun & very sticky times!
Am I glad I made the time to attend Baylor's Halloween party and witness the utter chaos...I mean fun? Of course! However, I'm equally thrilled that this is a once-a-year event. Now, the countdown is on to mentally prepare for the Christmas and Easter parties. Oh my!

Bragging Rights

Today was overflowing with proud parent moments. Anh & I beamed as we looked over Baylor's first report card and learned he had earned straight G's for "Good," the highest grade possible in Preschool! The good news continued when later in the day Jaxon produced his first progress report of the year, and it was plastered with straight P's for "Progressing" Towards State Standards, the highest mark possible for First Graders! Anh and I produced TWO geniuses!!!

As if two glowing report cards weren't enough of a prize, we all piled into the car and headed to Jaxon's school Open House where the teacher continued to praise Jaxon for his positive attitude and hard work. Jaxon gave us a tour of his classroom learning centers, and when we reached the Reading Station his teacher, Mrs. A, came over to explain that the books are categorized into 4 levels of difficulty. Each child was tested at the beginning of the school year to determine their reading level, and Mrs. A whispered to us, "Jaxon scored very high!" Oh??? Good to know! I mean, we know that Jaxon reads well. He, now, reads the bedtime story to Anh after all, but I guess we didn't have a point of comparison. Like I said before, we've got TWO geniuses! I'll be crossing my fingers that the trend continues!

School Days

Who is this big boy and what has he done with my baby? Yes, I realize that's Baylor, but I'm still pondering how he grew up so darn fast! This week, my little guy started 3-year old preschool, and man oh man was he ready to get the show on the road. This is one milestone that both of us have been eagerly awaiting.Of course as we prepared for Baylor's open house on Sunday, I wondered if I was really ready to send my youngest off on his own into the real world? Ultimately, YES, I am! Baylor has grown bored with me over the past several months, and playdates just aren't cutting it anymore. He's too dang smart for his own good, and he'll no doubt easily transition into this new chapter.Baylor made himself right at home as soon as we entered his new classroom. I'm sure it helps that he's familiar with the school thanks to big brother Jax. Baylor accompanied us when we'd pick Jax up from school, and he was a guest at all of the holiday parties. So, the teachers might have been new to Baylor, but they have known him since he was 3 months old. They were almost as shocked as Anh & me that Baylor is now old enough to be an official student! Both of Baylor's teachers, Ms. Jennifer and Ms. Susan, made a huge fuss over him. Clearly, Baylor enjoyed the attention, but all he really wanted to do was explore his new classroom. We definitely don't have to worry about him being bored! There's no shortage of toys, books, or planned activities to keep him busy.I think Baylor was actually disappointed that we were only "visiting" on Sunday, and he didn't get to spend all day with his new buddies! At least the real deal was less than 24 hours away.On Monday morning, Baylor was eager to load up and head out with Daddy to start his day. He proudly sported his backpack and dress shirt that he declared to be "just like Daddy's." That's when it truly hit me that our little baby was now our little man, and he had his eyes focused on the future which will no doubt be bright. As they drove to school, Baylor explained to Anh that he's "going to make a lot of new friends, share with everybody, and learn something." I'm glad he's been paying attention to our words of wisdom! Our star student is off to a brilliant start!
