Halloween Hayride

I'm not sure who has the better grin...the jack-o-lantern or the 3 silly boys? Ok, it's not even close. Those boys steal the show!
No one in our family really enjoys getting their hands dirty, but we decided to embrace the Season and roll up our sleeves for pumpkin carving. It went well thanks to Dad! Not surprising given his occupation. I certainly hope he's skilled at slicing, dicing, and carving.
Much debate went into this year's Halloween costumes, but eventually Jaxon & Baylor decided on being ninjas. Yes, Jaxon was a ninja last year, but this year, he's a white ninja. Baylor happily donned Jaxon's hand-me-down costume from last year, and while I realize it might be lacking in creativity, I thought the idea of 3 ninjas was cute. So, there you have it...My three ninjas!!!
What we lack in creativity, we make up for with cuteness!
Since our street is still undeveloped, we happily accepted our friends' invitation to join in the Halloween hayride. The parents & babies were able to sit back and ride from house to house while the children ran off some of the sugar rush. Talk about an ideal setup!
I'm definitely going to borrow the hayride idea in the future!
As expected, Grant didn't really get the concept of trick-or-treating, and Anh happily used his littlest ninja to reward his own sweet tooth. Better enjoy it while it lasts, dear! Your candy embezzling days are numbered!

Another World

After 9 years & 3 children, how do you celebrate your wedding anniversary? Well, we decided to do something out of this world and spend the weekend at Universal Studios. Why not embrace our imagination because I don't know that we could have possibly imagined our reality. We love it, but WOW! LOL
You can't tell from this picture where he looks completely uninterested, but Grant was actually a HUGE Minion fan. We had been watching the Minions dance for about 30 minutes while Jaxon & Baylor went on the Despicable Me ride with Anh, and even a huge fan has probably had enough after 30 minutes!
The older two were more excited about meeting Spongebob's friends, Patrick & Squidward.
However, everything paled in comparison to our time in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Once you pass through the gates, you feel like you've been transported to Hogwarts. It's VERY impressive! The theming is incredible, and the 3 rides are definitely thrilling. My advice would be to skip the Butterbeer, though. I guess if you're big fan of butterscotch and cream soda, it might be a hit, but no of us were fans.
The superhero section of the park was a close second with the boys, and the Spiderman ride ROCKS!
Jaxon & Baylor enjoyed the photo opportunities with the superheroes & villains, but Grant just couldn't understand these guys' outfit choices. Ha!
As is often the case at theme parks, it's impossible to truly capture the magic on camera, but the real sign of a successful day is always shown by the hard crash landing when we return to the hotel. Yep, it was a good day! I'm grateful the fun & blessings still fill our days 9 years later.

Go Go Grant

At 9 months of age, he's already got quite a fan club. Grant is so full of life & personality, it's easy to see why he's loved by so many. I guess it doesn't hurt that he's pretty cute too!

Grant seems to be technology-minded like his big brother & fellow Capricorn Jaxon. Although, unlike his brothers, he's not very good about sharing. As in, he doesn't share. Ever!
Again, I guess it doesn't hurt that he's cute!
Speaking of that whole Capricorn thing, at times it can feel like I'm raising Jaxon 2.0. The two boys have so many similar personality traits. Grant, however, is not the daredevil that Jaxon was as a baby. He's much more cautious and aware of the fact that he can get hurt. Grant is finally showing interest in walking. Although, he's perfectly content to just crawl from point A to point B. I'm sure that will change soon enough!

I guess he's got a little daredevil in him!

Birthday Breeze

A Bavarian birthday was more than enough celebration in my mind, but the friends back home didn't necessarily feel the same. So my celebration continued on a beautiful late October afternoon. Living in Florida definitely has it's perks!
The chartered sailboat outing was something I purchased at one of the fundraising silent auctions hosted by Grant & Baylor's school. Not sure what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised to discover we wouldn't be boarding some small dingy. The tune from Gilligan's Island was definitely playing in my head as we drove to the marina. For some reason, the size of the boat improved our odds in my mind. Also, there wasn't a strong wind that day. Yes, I realize that's not ideal when sailing, but the slight breeze was more than enough for me and the boat.

It was nice to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the company of friends and family. We shared a picnic lunch and sipped champagne. It was delightfully simple luxury. If that makes sense!

Whoever said, "Life is over at 30." wasn't living the right way or doing the right things! Take it from me, a chick transitioning from the mid to late thirties. Like wine, things improve with age!

The Waiting Game

Well, the dreaded day had arrived. It was time for us to depart for home. Mom & Dad would have a few more days to explore on their own since they got a late start, but our time was up. At least, we thought so! We boarded the train bound for the Munich airport at 4:30am allowing us plenty of time to make our 7:30am flight home to the U.S. Imagine our surprise when we arrive at the airport check-in counter and hear, "You've heard about the delay?" Ummmm...NO! We would have certainly slept in if we had heard about the delay! We were told the flight was delayed until around 10:30 or 11am, but that  the airline would keep us posted as more details became available. We were issued meal vouchers for breakfast and told to be patient. Okay...

As I'm sure you can guess, 11am came and went. We were sitting at the assigned gate waiting anxiously with all the other passengers for an update. To buy our patience the gate attendant started issuing meal vouchers for lunch. Okay...I'm all for a free meal, but after waking up at 4am, I wanted to be seated on a plane and headed home. It was a 13-hour flight after all. We needed to get the journey started. Especially since Aunt Nguyen was waiting at home with the boys, and she had a life and responsibilities in California that were awaiting her return. We watched as passenger after passenger walked up to inquire about the reason for the extensive delay and the possibility of being rebooked on a different flight. Each time, the gate attendant gave what was clearly a scripted response that disclosed ZERO information. It was actually rather comical given that the attendant was dressed in his lederhosen  complete with a feather plume in his hat. Oh, and he strongly resembled Will Ferrell from Saturday Night Live. Despite our rising frustration levels, it was hard not to chuckle at the spectacle.

It wasn't until around 4:30pm that they finally cancelled the flight. We all saw it coming. I mean we knew it was going to happen, but I guess you cling to hope that the travel gods will be kind. So, now what? The gate attendant instructed us to make our way to the customer service counter where we would receive hotel, taxi, and food vouchers. Great! By this point, the last thing we needed were more food vouchers. To pass the endless hours, we had made a game out of collecting food vouchers from the various airline workers. While we were technically allotted $42 ($14/meal), we managed to collect over $250 in food vouchers. Yeah, whatever. We were bored. I don't think it's going to doom the airline.

After more waiting, this time for customer service reps to make overnight assignments for approximately 100 people, we found ourselves in a taxi headed to a Best Western. Now, the word "airport" was in the title of the hotel name, but I assure you we were in this taxi for at least half an hour driving to what seemed like a field in the middle of freaking nowhere! Eventually, we did pull up to a building that in no way resembled a Best Western. In case you haven't traveled abroad, Best Westerns in Europe are actually very nice. They can be extremely upscale, in fact. This Best Western did not have inviting facade, but at this point, what were we going to do? We exited the taxi and joined the rest of our plane gang inside. Luckily, the interior was better than the exterior, and there was a bar and a restaurant prepared to serve us a complimentary dinner.
So, we all did the only we could...We drank! We laughed at the absurdity of the situation and tried to connect the dots on what could have possibly caused the delay. The airline had still not disclosed any information. Thanks to the internet and our weary eyes, we knew it wasn't weather related. Was there a mechanical problem? No one had any information. We retired to our rooms relatively early. I mean, we had been up since 4am! We woke bright & early and boarded a shuttle bus with our fellow passengers back to the airport. I'd like to say we were all confident that we would actually depart on a flight, but we knew by this point to expect absolutely anything. Check-in went smoothly. Security checkpoint was issue free. The board at the gate showed we were on-time. It wasn't until we started to actually board that everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Logically, it was at this point that the details started to flow, and I can understand why the airline was so tightlipped. Flight attendants, however, are very gossipy and couldn't wait to spill the beans. Apparently, our co-pilot went missing. In fact, he was missing until around Noon the previous day. Where was he? Turns out, he went to Oktoberfest. Wow! Shocker! That in itself wasn't the problem. The problem arose when he got the you-know-what beat out of him at Oktoberfest. During our Oktoberfest visits, we never witnessed any you-know-what kicking. Must have been more to that story, but the details we did have were that the co-pilot turned up in a Munich hospital. For whatever reason, the co-pilot did not contact the airline. So, all they knew was that he did not report for duty and was missing. Something tells me that pilot wasn't with the airline for much longer.

Finally, we were wheels up and headed home! The flight attendants announced that alcoholic beverages would be complimentary for the duration of the flight. Dang! That's a nice start. Next, came the news that each passenger would receive a $200 flight voucher. Okay, that's something. Then, we were instructed to complete paperwork to file for a refund on the return portion of our airfare. It took a few months, but eventually a check would arrive from the airline for that portion of our fare. I would have rather had a smooth trip home, but I understand that life happens, and this situation, was completely unforeseen. What can ya do? Sometimes, you've just got to roll with the punches thrown your way.

You can't let the bad ruin so much good!

A Birthday to Remember

Having the freedom to wake up and hop on a train that will whisk you away to new charming town to explore is nothing short of incredible! On day 7, we decided to explore Regensburg, a lovely little town situated on the Danube River.
I'm not certain my pictures really do these cities justice. While some of the architecture is similar, each of the towns has their own unique feeling. As we rode the trains to and from our destination, we would thumb through my guide books and decide on an adventure for the following day. It wasn't easy! The options are numerous. As much as we enjoyed Munich, I think the smaller towns were much more memorable. I guess I'm really a small town girl.
For lunch, we decided to try Wurstkuchl, the world's oldest sausage kitchen. They've been grilling up their famous finger-sized sausages since 1135. You don't maintain that kind of longevity by serving up tourist slop. I'm far from a sausage fan (Yes, that's a funny statement.), but I sampled my fair share during our trip. These were by far the best, in my opinion.
Regensburg is possibly one of the towns that gets overlooked when planning itineraries throughout the region, and that's really a shame because it's delightful. It's the sort of town where you could really get comfortable and lay down roots.
We returned to Munich in time for a lovely birthday dinner. Oh, did I fail to mention it was my birthday? It was my special day, and I'm not certain I'll be able to top it any time in the near future. I guess there's no harm in trying though!
