Wow! So, it's August. When did that happen? I feel like we were living in fast-forward from
Spring Break until now. In the past, I would have considered that a good thing because I'm not really a fan of Summer. However, this year, I have quite enjoyed the sweltering heat of Florida. I guess the key is to always be near a pool or beach. Funny that it took me three years to figure that out!
Once realizing that the start of Jaxon's Kindergarten year is approaching with lightening speed, it seemed only logical that we should start the back to school shopping. This will be the first year that we're responsible for school supplies, and both Jax and I were eager to tackle the list. That, however, requires me to venture into Target. In general, I tend to avoid shopping cart stores now. It used to be the opposite. Shopping carts made my life easier, but that's no longer the case. Now, both boys insist on walking. Jax is fine, but Baylor has deemed himself to be a"big boy" and no longer in need of the shopping cart seat which means the Target trip that used to take 30 minutes now lasts 3 hours!
While wandering the aisles, I know I must sound like a broken record to every other shopper in the vicinity because I find myself repeating phrases like, "Come back here!", "Don't touch that!", "Put that back!", "You better not!" and "Do you want timeout?" It's ridiculous really, but otherwise I will be that woman standing at the customer service counter asking that the store be placed on lockdown while I locate my two missing boys. Actually, Jax is very well behaved. I wouldn't lose him because he doesn't wander off. Baylor, on the other hand, doesn't seem to understand that he has a fairly good life with us and might want to make an effort to stick around.
Anyway, getting back to today's mission of school supplies, the boys and I made our way to the back corner of the store with our shopping cart. Along the way, items were leaping off the store shelves into our cart. This is quite common for us at Target. I go armed with a list, but once there, it occurs to me that I actually overlooked at least 1000 items that we simply NEED or life will come to a screeching halt. This almost always leads to a look of panic when the total is displayed at checkout, but somehow the scenario continues to repeat itself.
Again, getting back to the story...once in the school supply section, Jax and I quickly located all the boring stuff like boxes of tissue, paper towels, hand sanitizer, etc. Actually, I was thinking that it was awesome of the Target employees to round up all of these items from the various departments around the store and display them in one central location for us. That made my life a lot easier and saved me at least an hour of wandering and threatening Baylor.
After all the boring classroom necessities were in the cart, Jax and I turned our focus to the "fun" stuff like notebooks, folders, pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, storage cases, etc. Well, some of the fun was robbed from us when we realized that there were very specific instructions on which notebooks and folders he should buy. Wouldn't you know it, they wanted boring solid-colored covers, no Super Heroes or cartoon characters. What?! Where's the fun in that? At that point, I declared that we would simply have to buy a set of notebooks for both school and home. That seemed to bring the smile back to Jax's face. When he realized there were cool pencils and erasers to choose, Jax was even more thrilled.
Meanwhile, I guess to Baylor it appeared that I was in some sort of "free-for-all" shopping mode because when I turned around to examine the cart, I realized it was piled (and I do mean PILED) high with all sorts of CRAP! There were no less than 40 boxes of crayons, at least the same number of markers, and more pencils than I could even begin to count. There were more pencils in my cart than in the display, if that tells you anything. It seems I got a little too caught up in the character choices when I should have been focusing on what Baylor had decided was "essential."
Ten minutes later, after sorting out what I actually intended to purchase as opposed to what Baylor thought we needed, we were back to focusing on the school list. Jax and I had managed to locate every single item except plastic pronged folders in red, blue, green, and yellow. Surely, the folders were somewhere. I was just overlooking them. After wandering the aisles 4 more times carefully scanning the contents of the shelves all while threatening Baylor to "shape up," I still couldn't find the folders. By this point, I was absolutely at the end of my rope. Nap time had come and gone, and Baylor was letting me know it. I was certain that at any moment I might just begin screaming. I accepted defeat and told Jax that we would just have to find the folders another day. He didn't care. Jax doesn't dread the idea of visiting another shopping cart store the way I do.
As I raced to the checkout lanes, determined to exit the store before Baylor or I had another tantrum, it occurred to me that the Target employees might be testing me. I detoured from the direct route to checkout and scanned the regular office supply aisle where I discovered cases of plastic pronged folders! Those silly Target employees! What a mean trick to play on parents! I couldn't help smiling as I knew the discovery meant I had indeed succeeded in one-stop shopping which no doubt would save the shred of sanity that I have left. Then, my joy crumbled to despair when I realized there were no red folders. Where are the *%#@& red folders?!?! Of all the *%#@& luck! Then, in the very, very back (I think someone hid it actually) I found 1 RED plastic pronged folder. "DONE!" I actually shouted that in the aisle. By that point, I'm sure security cameras were pointed on me, the crazy woman, in the office supply aisle.
The discovery of that red folder returned me to calm-cool-collected Shannon. Let's hope I can maintain that composure as we shop for shoes, a backpack, and a lunch box tomorrow. Surely, those 3 items can't be that hard to find, right?
