Party People Inc

So, at some point leading up to the holiday season, I completely lost my mind and thought that it would be fun to host a Christmas party. My plan was to primarily extend invites to the office staff and close friends, but then Anh asked whether it would be possible to include a "few" more people. I agreed and embraced a the-more-the-merrier outlook about the entire venture. It helped that we were planning to have the party catered by a caterer we've used in the past for office functions.

Well, my stress level skyrocketed when two weeks prior to the party the caterer let me know that she was actually double-booked on our date. I guess the other event paid more because we were suddenly without backup and expecting roughly 60-75 party guests. Yikes! A plan B came together rather quickly. By now, you probably know plan B as Brad (aka Bradley). Yes, having a dear friend that just happens to be a Vegas chef/event planner-coordinator/corporate manager/semi-professional photographer comes in quite handy! The party went off without a hitch, and I dare say that we might have raised the bar a notch or two. Christmas Party 2011??? I don't think so! Maybe every other year.

We did our best to create a celebratory environment from the moment our guests stepped onto the property. The exterior of the house was beautifully lit with luminaries to compliment the landscape lighting and the poinsettia-filled fountain.
Brad elegantly staged 4 food and beverage stations throughout the dining and great room. The dessert table provided some WOW-factor as soon as people entered the front door...Then, guests could sample the hot hors d'oeuvres on the main dining table...Finally, the wine and cheese stations were placed in the kitchen where guests could nibble, sip, and chat the night away. It was perfect, if I do say so myself. In the weeks leading up to the party, I worked to transform the house into a Christmas Wonderland. I can only partially blame the party for this behavior because this is typical of me every year. The party just allowed me to take things to a new level.Since the weather had drastically improved over the previous days, we extended the staging to include the pool patio. This would allow a little more elbow room during the peak party hours, and the outdoor fireplace and beer-stocked pool fridge were the perfect eye candy to lure people out the door. The Master Behind the Madness! When I felt stressed, Brad laughed. You could tell which one of us has built a career out of entertaining people!Kathryne (one of our former employees) arrived early, rolled up her sleeves, and joined the workforce like family. I guess that's why we love her! A brief pause to snap a group photo prior to the real chaos, the arrival of the guests! I swear it's like 60+ people arrived in a tour bus. You'd never know they all drove separately based on how they poured through the door at the same time.Rushed greetings led to lively chats and antics...
It's funny how people warm up the camera after a few drinks...Even funnier is playing a round of Hot Potato where a sample breast implant serves as the potato...just an example of the party games played at a plastic surgeon's house. The winner left with a spa basket including our skin care line, and everyone else spent the rest of the evening passing around the breast implant and discussing the "possibilities."Even the babysitter, Cassie, was instructed to take the night off and enjoy the evening as a guest. As if we don't treat her like family every other time she's over. Being a guest is definitely better!Hands down, it was a fabulous evening that felt like it flew by in 15 minutes. Wish I could the same about the prep work! Heartfelt thanks go out to Brad for making it all a reality. Sure, Anh and I could have managed on our own, but Brad made it all the more special by simply coming to visit. Lending moral support would have been enough, but that's not Brad. That's why he will always hold a special place in our hearts. Love you, Brad!

Natural Beauty

Depending on the photographer, the term "Natural Beauty" can apply to just about anything. I think we can all agree that the following pictures easily fall under that category.
After all, the boys have proven to me with their ever-growing seashell collection that beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

History Lesson

For most of Brad's visit, the weather was uncooperative. Rather than our usual Fall-like December temperatures, we were suffering through a record-setting December freeze...good for Floridians that are usually complaining about Christmas shopping in shorts and flip-flops, but bad for tourists like Brad looking to shed their winter layers. Oh well! Brad made the most of it, defiantly wearing his shorts and flip-flops as we locals broke out the boots and parkas.

On one of the nicer days, we decided to explore the Castillo downtown. Brad is an excellent photographer with all the toys and gadgets to prove it. Of course, they don't do him much good when he leaves them at home...What kind of photographer forgets his flash and battery charger? The kind that hasn't taken a vacation in a decade due to their relentless work schedule, I guess. I bet he doesn't make that mistake again!Even with limited gear, Brad seemed to be in photographer's heaven when we ventured out into our historic fishing village. Of course, I had to make due with my beginner camera which is more than enough to suit my needs, but feels woefully inadequate when you're standing next to a guy with two professional draped around his neck. I had to fight to keep the green-eyed monster away. Regardless, I'm happy with the shots I captured, and when my equipment wasn't up to par, I just made sure Brad captured the moment on my behalf. Team effort!Jax was less than thrilled to be exploring along side of two camera junkies. After patiently waiting for us to photograph every square inch of the fort's exterior, he eventually made a break for the entrance. He'd had waited long enough! He was going inside with or without us! I quickly discovered that Jax is much more tolerant of the camera when it is focused on him. What a little ham!Brad, however, prefers to remain behind the lens. He did agree to pose for a few shots with his buddy though. So at least I do have photographic evidence that he did in fact visit us at least once throughout the course of our decades-long friendship. It really was entertaining to watch Brad as he wandered and put his two trusty cameras to work. While I prefer to focus on human subjects and see the landscape merely as the backdrop, Brad is a budding landscape photographer. His work is very "National Geographic." Occasionally, I did lure him out of his "comfort zone" and get him to direct his lenses towards the boys. I had to be a bit selfish! As always, my two little characters were willing to put on quite the performance when the camera was pointed in their direction. Here's Baylor bracing for the cannon's BOOM. I wonder if he really believed it would fire? We didn't dress Baylor to match the historic cannon. It just worked out that way. Yes, son, we can see you & don't you dare follow through with your brother's idea to climb inside and pretend to be the cannonball! Here's Jax doing his best Zoolander impersonation...After that, it was back to landscape photography. I'm sure the boys actually enjoyed not having the camera in their face that day. Don't get used to that, Jax & Baylor. You're still mommy's preferred subjects.
With the light fading, we decided to call it a day at the fort and introduce Brad to our gourmet popsicle shop. The boys were VERY receptive to that plan.

Which made having them pose for this shot on the way out seem like extreme torture. That's life as a celebrity...always having to be camera-ready. Gotta prepare them for the future!

Hello?

Is anybody out there? Ha! It's been a while since the blog has seen any activity, and I take full responsibility for that neglect. We have been super busy living our lives to the fullest and enjoying all the festivities that accompany the holiday season and end of the year celebrations. Since my last entry on Dec. 15th (Gosh, it really has been forever!), Anh & I have been primarily focused on our roles as host and hostess for our dear friend Brad (aka Bradley to the rest of the world) who FINALLY made it down South for a visit, and then within a day or so of Brad's departure, almost the entire family arrived to celebrate the holidays with us. That's 13 people & 7 dogs in case anyone is counting! I can't imagine why Brad decided to head back home to Las Vegas before the crowd arrived?

As a result of all that company and a packed holiday season, I have tons and tons of updates to share. So, join me as I start fresh in 2011 with a renewed appreciation for timely postings. Now that I'm not trying to be the hostess with the mostess or attending endless parties or hosting a party or recovering from a party or wrapping presents or just plain being lazy, I should be able to resume my regular routine. Should...

Pals

Jaxon's excellent behavior was rewarded this week when he was named the Pond Pal at school. His teacher, Mrs. P, has incorporated a frog theme into the classroom decor and most of the children's activities. The Pond Pal gets to serve as Mrs. P's special helper for the week and is also awarded a special weekend with the class mascot Freddy Frog.Part of the weekend "fun" involves assembling a scrapbook of the time you spent with Freddy Frog who is supposed to accompany you everywhere! Let me just say that I was beyond thrilled to discover that Jaxon's huge honor would require me to complete yet another project on what turned out to be the busiest project weekend (Christmas shopping, present wrapping, party planning, Christmas cards, etc.) of the holiday season. All sorts of holiday responsibilities on top of the usual list of chores, and then, the last minute inclusion of the class project. Fun! Of course Jaxon would be honored this week and not some less busy week in August, September, October, or November. Yay! Just what does Mrs. P have against me?

Regardless, we did as instructed and incorporated Freddy into our activities. Jax took his Pond Pal title very seriously. Freddy went EVERYWHERE with the boys. There were a few close calls with Freddy, however. At one point during our Christmas shopping excursion, we found ourselves in Pottery Barn Kids. Logically, the boys got wrapped up in all of the toys on display, and as I wandered the store shopping, I stumbled upon Freddy ALONE lying on a table nowhere near any member of our family. Good thing nobody decided to take him home! Of course, I'm sure it helped that Freddy doesn't appear to have had a bath since the start of the school year. Still, it was a close call. Jaxon got a little lecture on responsibility when I returned his stuffed pal to the safety of our stroller.

Freddy also wandered off on his own once we returned home. As we all frantically searched the house, I swore I was NOT going to be the mom that had to explain to 18 Kindergartners and 1 teacher that we were irresponsible and lost the class mascot. I was having flashbacks to the day that I forgot my assigned snack day during Preschool. Thank God, we discovered Freddy had used Baylor as an accomplice and was simply hidden away upstairs.
After all that excitement, Freddy spent his final night at our house tucked safely in Jaxon's backpack. I can only hope that this will be the one and only time this school year that Jaxon is rewarded with this special honor! Way to go, Jax! Now, why don't you tone down the excellent behavior. Live a little!

The Name Game

We all have Jaxon to thank for our names or perhaps I should say titles or nicknames. Ba-Ba, Anh's mom, was the first to be renamed by 1-year old Jax. Ba-Ba was Jaxon's version of the Vietnamese word for paternal grandmother, bà nội. I'm not sure why he chose to shorten it because he never had trouble saying ông nội which means paternal grandfather when addressing Anh's dad.

Jaxon's formality continued when addressing my dad who was dubbed Grandfather, but my mom has always simply been Grandma. The casual approach continued within the immediate family. Anh transitioned from Da-Da to Daddy to Dad, and while Jaxon took his sweet time saying my name, eventually he muttered Ma-Ma which led to Mommy, and now, I am simply known as Mom. Baylor has always been Bay-Bay. Although, we have been making more of an effort lately to use his real name because I'm not sure he realizes he has one!

Speaking of Baylor, he has taken his own liberties lately with The Name Game. Over Thanksgiving, my dad was "Grandfather" to Jaxon and "Gran-fa-eee" to Baylor. Those were the two most uttered words of the holiday BY FAR! We'll see who is renamed at Christmas. This could get confusing!

PAUSE

I'm taking liberties with my imaginary remote control for Life. We've been BUSY, BUSY, BUSY lately, and unfortunately, the blog has fallen by the wayside. I have zero intention of abandoning it though. I'm just doing my best to make mental note of all the funny stories and happenings that I'd like to share once life slows down a bit. So, for now, I'm just checking in to say, "We're alive and haven't succumbed to the unusually frigid 20-degree temps in Florida!"
