Adrenaline vs. Sugar

Birthday Party Insanity!!! That's how we closed out the weekend and welcomed the month of May. Hopefully, Baylor won't be too disappointed later this month when we celebrate his 3rd birthday with waaaaay less fanfare than his little friend Max experienced. All of the kids came dressed as Super Heroes for this Super Party. Baylor dusted off his Wolverine costume from Halloween, but Jaxon decided to go as Bumblebee from Transformers. I'm not sure Bumblebee is technically a Super Hero, but nobody questioned us.

This GIANT bounce house obstacle course was the centerpiece for the party, but far from the only entertainment. Max's yard is like PeeWee's Playhouse with front & backyard treehouses, a trampoline, swimming pool, swing set, rope & tire swings, a roller coaster...
Yes, I said roller coaster, and Baylor LOVED it! He rode that mini coaster at least 100 times. Oh, and for the record, that's Baylor you hear in the video not me providing sound effects!

As if all of that isn't enough, Max's family has a miniature horse named Scooter that lives in the backyard, and he was saddled and ready to entertain the kids with rides. Just don't call Scooter a pony. It offends him! He's a miniature horse.

Jaxon wasn't the slightest bit interested in anything except the bounce house though. Eventually, we had to insist on a wardrobe change because he was a big sweaty mess and nothing ruins a party faster than heat stroke! After an hour or so of watching the kids sprint from activity to activity, our hosts decided they needed to step things up a notch and whipped out the pinata. Yay! Sugar! Exactly what the kids needed to keep their energy levels up. Wouldn't want them to calm down or anything. The birthday boy took the first couple of swings and was followed by a half-hearted effort from 5 or 6 other toddlers. Then, Baylor stepped up to the plate. I'm not sure he understood why we were trying to smack the pinata, but he boy oh boy did he give it a beating!Sadly, Baylor didn't get to bask in the glory of pinata destruction. The older kid that followed him landed the fatal blow, and then, the kids went into a feeding frenzy. All of the adults just stood back afraid to risk life and limb by intervening in the chaos.Next, cake and ice cream were served. Yay! More sugar!!! I could hardly believe that Max's mom made the cake herself. I now know who to hit up for favors when planning parties for Jaxon & Baylor. As far as kids' parties go, this one was pure delight for young & old alike. It's hard to believe that we'll be celebrating this same milestone in Baylor's life VERY soon. We may have to do without the bounce house and mini horse, but that won't make the event any less special or memorable. Let the countdown begin!

Shrimp or Swim?

Saturday, we made what has been almost an annual trek up to Amelia Island for the Shrimp Festival. Since we're now seasoned veterans, we only strolled the quaint streets of Fernandina Beach for an hour or so. Every year, the festival becomes more and more popular which equates to more and more people. So, we enjoyed our seafood lunch, checked out the Kid Zone, and then made a mad dash for Amelia Island Plantation. While I would have preferred to waste away the afternoon on Fernandina's beautiful beaches, Jaxon seems to have a love-hate relationship with all beaches. Not a good thing considering we live at the beach. Grandfather must be brainwashing Jax and passing on the belief that sand is evil! Actually, Jax has always struggled to accept that sand is not dirt. The boy does not like dirt, and therefore sand falls under a questionable category. On Saturday, Jax was in hate mode.Thankfully, the resort has a lovely lagoon pool overlooking the ocean. That was sort of a compromise. The boys never seem to tire of swimming. They really are little fish. Jaxon even shocked me recently when I realized he can swim the distance of our pool and back, and he can swim to the bottom of the deep end to retrieve the dive sticks. Somehow, I was unaware of this.Baylor, on the other hand, still needs to use his floaties. So you can imagine how shocked we were about a week ago when after a day of swimming, Baylor promptly climbed out of the pool and removed his floaties only to jump in without them. Of course, he sunk like a rock. I'm not sure what he was thinking. I guess he figured he had perfected his stroke. Obviously not!Ice cream at the resort village completed our ideal day. Seriously, life really doesn't get much better than shrimp, swimming, and ice cream. Ha!

Bunny Money

The Easter Bunny was especially good to us this year. We were spoiled with not one but two egg hunts! The first was the week before Easter at the beach club and served as the warm-up for the main event on Easter Sunday with Grandfather and Grandma. The boys were giddy with excitement prior to the hunt. I'm not sure they realized that the Easter Bunny was stuffing the eggs with candy that morning rather than the cold, hard cash that he uses on the official holiday egg hunt. Sorry, boys, the bunny has to abide by an annual budget. The club divided the children into an older and a younger group as an attempt to level the playing field. Baylor's group went first, and it was clear there were a few rookies in the group. I had already confirmed that Baylor remembered the strategy from last year...skip the close eggs. Let the rookies fight for those. Instead, take off for the ones in the distance and fill your bucket.Very quickly, Baylor revised the plan. He had Jaxon's buddy, Sean, working for him. Baylor simply carried the bucket while Sean filled it. That Baylor...always thinking! We heard a rumor about a buried golden egg for the grand prize, but I'm not sure it was ever located. Toddlers don't grasp the concept of searching for the hidden egg when there's hundreds of other candy-filled eggs out in the open. Oh well!Next, the older kids took a turn. They were a little more motivated in the quest for gold. Jaxon and Sean were simply happy to fill their buckets and then head for the pool! The morning egg hunt was simply a necessary prerequisite. Not wanting to leave the adults out of the fun, the beach club organized an adult bottle hunt. Airline-sized bottles of liqueur were hidden in the landscaping outside of the club's main entrance. The only problem is that unlike the egg hunts that were held in the morning, the bottle hunt took place at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. So how do you think the adults that would be interested in bottle hunting passed the hours? You got it! When you combine the high number of alcoholic beverages consumed by the club members with the grand entry staircase and flip-flops, you're just asking for trouble! Somehow, (truly a miracle!) there were no injuries this year. Unfortunately, we were near the rear of the pack and the bottles weren't as plentiful as the eggs. Aunt Nguyen was the only member of our team to find a bottle. At least the laughs were more plentiful!Fast forward to Easter Sunday, and we all once again set out with our baskets hoping to score. Only this time, we were in search of the annual bragging rights associated with finding the silver and/or gold egg. Oh, and the green stuff inside. The boys proved to be stiff competition for the adults. The Easter Bunny really stepped things up a notch this year. Not only were there more cash eggs, the Bunny hid a few toys around the yard, but the boys weren't distracted. They simply came back for the toys after snatching up as many of the eggs as they could get their grubby little hands on!2011 turned out to be Anh's year. He FINALLY enjoyed the thrill of a successful egg hunt! In past years, Anh's total rarely topped a single digit, but this year he walked away with the $100 gold egg. Of course, it wasn't hard to top his performance from last year when he walked away with NOTHING! Nguyen took the $50 silver, but then promptly donated it to the boys' piggy banks. Anh donated his jackpot to my wallet. Ha!

The final tally was:

Travis - $157.50 (Proof that the smaller bills really do add up!)

Nguyen - $115.00

Anh - $108.00 (Good thing he found that gold egg!)

Baylor - $58.25

Shannon - $57.00 (Shouldn't have let Baylor have that last egg!)

Jaxon - $44.00 (As usual, Jax wasn't happy about his last place finish. Luckily, he seemed happy once I explained that if we had factored in the value of the toys he would have easily taken first place.)

So as you can see, gold doesn't necessarily equal victory because it was Travis that took top honors. Until next year, when we'll all be sure to trip him at the starting gate!

No Big Deal

I'm dismissive or possibly indifferent? I'm simply unphased by forest and brush fires after 4 years in Florida. Can you believe it's been FOUR years already?! These fires are just too common down here to get worked up over them anymore. This the third time that we've been threatened by a fire in our immediate area, and instead of fear, I actually felt excitement today. I guess that demonstrates my extreme confidence in our forestry division and firefighters. They battle these fires all too often and do a damn good job of it because I rarely hear reports of damage from these infernos. (Brief pause to knock on wood!) So when I reached our neighborhood entrance after picking Jaxon up from school & saw State Troopers turning traffic away in all directions as smoke was billowing from the surrounding woods, I barely reacted. No big deal! Just another forest fire. What actually went through my mind was, "Well, at least I'm not pregnant and about to have a baby this time!" Instead of rushing home to pack bags with priceless family possessions, the boys and I drove to the far North side of the neighborhood closest to where the fire would be approaching and parallel to the section of the main road that was closed to traffic. From that vantage point, I could tell there was approximately 2 miles of densely wooded land separating our community from the raging fire.

What did we do? We stopped to play at an undiscovered new neighborhood playground, of course! (That's how big my neighborhood is! I think we might be the first people to discover the latest playground.) As the boys played and I watched the helicopters and planes circling the blaze, we all marveled at the colors of the smoke wafting through the sky. In that moment, I realized I had turned into my crazy neighbor from Wichita, Kansas. The one that shocked me during my first true tornado warning. The afternoon sky turned pitch black and the tornado sirens were blaring. I gathered our dogs and sought shelter in the basement as we're all taught to do in Tornado Alley. As I watched the news reports and tried not to panic as the meteorologist traced the storm's path across the city, I glanced out the tiny basement window and there was my neighbor sitting on her FRONT PORCH SMOKING A CIGARETTE & SIPPING ON A MARTINI! What the heck?!? Was that woman crazy??? Nope, she was just indifferent to tornadoes. I am now that crazy lady!

At last report, the fire that was once blazing and spread from 10 acres to 100 acres in the period of an hour, was now approximately 50 percent contained and moving in the opposite direction. By morning, I hope the news will be even better. Don't worry about us though. This crazy woman is going to sleep soundly tonight.

Backyard Oasis

Spring Fever is my primary excuse for neglecting the blog. I came down with a pretty bad case of it which resulted in a bit of patio redecoration. Once the new furniture arrived, I was unable to resist heating the pool and declared it open for the 2011 season. We've been living out there ever since! My favorite spot has to be the new chaise lounges. They are perfection and lead to hours of pure shameful laziness. Now that we have a true outdoor dining set, we enjoy al fresco dinners almost every evening, and Anh is on his way to earning the title Grill Master Extraordinaire. The boys and I even made a second attempt at purchasing flowers, and this time, the trip was drama-free. Whew! Now, we just have to keep the plants alive. I'm always up for a challenge.
So, you see, I have been keeping busy. Lounging poolside is far from hard work, but it does tend to zap you of all motivation. I'll try to work on that!

War

I'm ticked off! I realize I've got a lot of catching up to do on the blog & I promise that is going to happen this week, but my blood is boiling at the moment and that has motivated me to blog on a random topic. I'm declaring WAR on the raccoon that has been raiding our trash cans for the last few months. He's in BIG trouble now! We tried to handle things in a nice civilized manner by using bungee cords to tightly fasten the lids closed. Our old raccoon got the hint and moved on when we implemented this tactic. However, this jerk is more determined to make our lives difficult. I suspect he's hiding in the bushes somewhere laughing every morning as we gather the trash and food particles that he's scattered from one end of the driveway to the other!

The bungee cords weren't much of a deterent. Within a matter of a week, the raccoon had learned how to unfasten them. So, we drilled holes into the trash can and started fastening the lids closed with plastic ties. We thought, "There's no way he's going to get the lids open now!" WRONG!!! The raccoon was frustrated for a couple weeks, but eventually figured out he could simply gnaw through the thick plastic ties. Geez Louise! So, I decided it was time to play hardball and called Grandfather to see whether he or Uncle Travis owns a "quiet" gun. I just want to end my raccoon problem, after all, not wake up the entire neighborhood and end up with the police at my door. Sadly, they don't own a weapon appropriate for this job.

This morning, I called Animal Control. Well, evidently, they don't deal with raccoons unless they're already dead. Shouldn't be long before I'm calling them back! Animal Control referred me to Animal Wildlife, and they stated it would be completely legal for me to "take care of the problem on my own" since the raccoon is on private property, but also provided me with the contact information for several trappers in my area. Their services would be at my expense. So...I'm soliciting advice on how to proceed from the 1 or 2 loyal readers that might have stuck around despite my absence. Should we:

(1) Buy a trap for approximately $25 and take the humane route of relocating the raccoon. I'm not thrilled with the idea of loading a pissed off wild animal into any of our vehicles. I doubt he's going to be very cooperative during the relocation and release process!

(2) Buy a BB gun for approximately $50-75 and "take of the problem on my own."

(3) Hire the trapper.

or

(4) Put red pepper flakes all over the trash can. (Grandma's idea. Had to throw that one in!)

I'm leaning towards the BB gun because that's certainly going to result in a blog-worthy story. I just hope it's not that somebody's going to "shoot their eye out!" (Had to throw in a reference to Grandma's favorite Christmas movie.) Seriously though, I doubt this will be our last raccoon, and the BB gun seems like the better investment. What to do? Advice please!

Bedtime Confessions

Jaxon: "Daddy, when I grow up I want a cool car."

Anh smiles & nods.

Baylor: "Daddy, when I grow up I want to be Darth Vader!"

OMG! Watch out, World! One is gonna be a terror on the road, and the other is just gonna be a terror!
