A Good Time with Great Friends...Oh, and a Super Bowl

Super Bowl weekend in Las Vegas...is there any better place to be? It'd be tough to top, let me just say that. The Saints victory was no doubt the icing on the proverbial cake, but the entire weekend was a blast. Anh and I spent Friday night at the Four Seasons which is attached to Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino. The rooms occupy the top 4 floors which lead me to believe that the view would be amazing. I'm sure it would have been, if we had been oriented towards the Strip, but sadly we were facing the ugly airport. Oh well, we were only there for a night, and that's about the only complaint I could possibly come up with. You just can't beat the service of the Four Season's staff. They're awesome!
After a meet & greet with the other conference attendees, Anh and I headed off to a late dinner at Aureole in Mandalay Bay. The restaurant is known for it's "wine angels" that ascend a wine tower in the center of the restaurant to retrieve bottles of wine ordered the guests. The higher the wine angel ascends, the more expensive the bottle. Needless to say, our wine angel didn't get too far off the ground. It was the first night! No casino winnings yet! Plus, Anh and I enjoyed the seasonal tasting menu and wine pairing. So, our wine came by the glass. I know...excuses! Excuses!Saturday morning arrived all too quickly. Anh was up bright & early to join his colleagues at the conference, and I made my way over to the Excaliber to meet up with one of our best friends, Brad. Brad is the real reason we go to Vegas. If we didn't go there, we'd never see him because he's a work-a-holic. Although, I'm not really sure whether it's by choice. The company just seems to meltdown when he's not around. Yep, he's that good. Super powers, I tell ya!

By early afternoon, Anh was able to join the party. Brad mentally clocked out for a few hours and took us to a nice brewery off the Strip. I know! Can you believe it? We left the Strip. That NEVER happens. Who knew there was this whole other "normal" side to Vegas. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I guess I can always pretend that it doesn't exist. Anyway, those normal "Vegas" people know how to make some good beer! Not a big surprise, really.

Eventually Brad's iPhone was ringing off the hook, the text messages were stacking up, and it was clearly time to return to the chaos. We parted ways so Brad could put out the fires, and Anh and I could relocate from the Four Seasons to Aria, one of the new hotels at Vegas' brand-spankin' new City Center. It's definitely not to be missed, but honestly, I was a bit disappointed. Yes, it's flashy and sparkly and glamorous, but it's not really "Vegas." There are no clouds on the ceiling, no gondolas floating through a grand canal, and there was no real theme. It's Vegas dammit! You have to have a theme!
I guess you could say Aria's theme was texture and technology. The designers seemed to play with texture and color. That's a little to artsy-fartsy for me, at least when it comes to Vegas. I want sophistication in NYC or LA, but in Vegas, I want some cheesy murals & over-the-top glamor. That said, the rooms are pretty cool & high tech with automated everything. The lights, entertainment center, and window coverings are all controlled by remote. It's a guy's dream! Me, I used the "Master" switch by the door to turn everything on & off in one click. It was much easier.

Where Aria did impress me was the caliber of it's restaurants. The directory is like a Who's Who of the culinary world. Anh and I had a tough time deciding where to eat, but ultimately we selected Shawn McClain's Sage. It was incredible! The food, the service, everything was top notch. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The same can be said about Jean Philippe's Patisserie. I wanted to sample EVERYTHING on display. He is truly an artist!

On Sunday, we continued our gourmet dining experience with lunch at In-N-Out Burger. This was our 2nd visit to the chain, and it was just as good as I remembered. They make a good burger, but the fries are a little strange. Our buddy, Farid, explained that our taste buds aren't accustomed to the lack of preservatives. The fries are cut from fresh potatoes, never frozen, and they aren't doused in salt. Ah! I have to admit, I missed the salt. The burger was delicious though with exactly the amount of grease I needed after a late night.

Sadly, Sunday meant we had to say goodbye to our out-of-town friends that flew in for the conference. They were all doing the responsible thing & heading back to work on Monday. Not us! We were going to stay for the big game! After saying our goodbyes, we went and placed a $100 bet on the Saints, and then joined Brad where we had reserved seats at the bar waiting for us. I could seriously get used to V.I.P treatment.

I think, by now, everyone knows how the game ended. What a game! What a season! What a story! Oh, and to top it off, we had a little extra money in our pockets. Well, until we doubled down on the KU game against TX on Monday. (We won that one too!) We bailed on the celebratory chaos & headed off the Strip with Brad to his favorite tapas restaurant, Firefly. So good! But, again we were off the Strip! It wasn't as weird that time because I could still see the high rises. I knew we weren't off in some bizarro universe.

Having broken away from the Strip's grasp on us, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to finally explore The Palms & The Hard Rock Casino. Oh my! This is where the young & beautiful go! And, the old & dirty too...no doubt checking out the young & beautiful. I'm disappointed I've been missing out on this fun. It will definitely be on the next itinerary.

Sunday was by far the most unusual experience of the trip. That's not to say it wasn't fun because it really & truly was, but I never thought I'd find myself in the middle of a nature preserve on a Vegas trip. I guess Brad wanted us to detox just a bit before taking us to the airport because he took us on a little pre-flight day trip to Red Rock Canyon. The desert is beautiful. It's not necessarily the kind of beauty I want to see every day, but the sculptural details of the land is really something to behold.
The weather wasn't ideal for hiking, but since we were pressed for time anyway, the driving tour of the park was perfect. We stopped at a little tourist trap with a petting zoo & lodge to enjoy a tasty drink by the fireplace. It was a great setting for a cold, rainy day in the desert while enjoying our last few hours with a close friend. That's ultimately what made the experience special, quality time with Brad uninterrupted by the iPhone.
All too soon, we were headed for the airport and back to our "normal" every day lives. The getaway was great and exactly what we needed. Too bad Aunt Nguyen was left to deal with our 2 rowdy boys...oh did I mention that they were sick, rowdy boys? That's a whole different story. After a week at home with two sick children, I'm thinking I may be ready to go back to Vegas!

Viva Las Vegas

I bet you didn't even realize Anh & I are in Las Vegas. Well, we are! Flew in on Friday and will depart Monday afternoon. A little conference get-a-way is exactly what the doctor ordered. Thank goodness Obama's recent comments didn't scare all the corporations away from booking Vegas conventions.

I love Vegas! Sure it's gawdy & over-the-top, but I absolutely LOVE it!!!! Gazillions of flashing and twinkling lights, the fabulous restaurants and shows, the excitement that stems from the collective dream of hitting the jackpot, the booze and subsequent spectacle...I could go on & on. I do love all of those things. The grandeur of Vegas is what I find most intoxicating, not the free or over-priced drinks. It's a fantasy land where you can leave reality behind and embark on an adventure entirely of your own making.

Yes, all of those things are reason enough to love Las Vegas, but the main reason I keep going back is because every trip is a mini reunion. You see, Vegas is one of those cities where it's easy to convince people to go. Clearly, it's a city loved by many! Each trip offers a chance to reconnect with friends that we haven't seen in a while. Which leads me to wonder is it really Vegas that I love? Maybe it's actually seeing our friends that I love? Nah!!!!! Viva Las Vegas!!!

Just Because

Looking back over my recent blog entries, I realized it's been a while since I have shared pictures. It's not because I'm hoarding them. The truth is I have been really bad about taking pictures lately. We haven't been up to much. That's not to say that we haven't been busy because we certainly keep busy, just no real "excitement." That's really no excuse for not documenting my boys' cuteness. Here's a little proof that every day mundane stuff can be fun when you have these two by your side.
This was one of the rare warm days in January. It was so nice to defrost! Then, the temps dipped again. Luckily, not enough to keep us cooped up.Jax really loves his new wheels. On this day, he logged 4.5 miles. Quite a workout!Baylor loves slides. He shows no fear, and will hurl himself face-first down a slide, regardless of how high or intimidating it may look to bystanders. I remember Jax used to be like that. Now, he's older and suffered a few bumps & bruises along the way so he knows to think before doing anything too crazy...well...sometimes.He still doesn't really say much, but you have to imagine Baylor is saying, "Look at me, mom!" in this shot. This picture serves as more proof that Baylor is currently fearless on the playground. He was so proud of himself for tackling this wobbly chain ladder. Then, his big brother had to come over and show off his speed and agility which had to leave Baylor thinking, "Damn! He's fast!"Recently, Baylor has graduated to the "big boy" swings. Jax is extremely grateful that he longer has to suffer the embarrassment of being pushed in a "baby" swing alongside Baylor.Jax showing off his skills again with little brother not far behind.
"Dang! That kid is good!"
Just can't get enough of the slide."Outta my way, mom!"
Testing the traction on his sneakers.

Far from thrilling, but proof that the boys are still around. We haven't put them on the curb just yet. Although, the thought does cross my mind from time to time!

Cold Snap

It's a bit worrisome that I've now received THREE email notices from our power company warning me about the high bill I should be expecting in February thanks to the record-setting freeze we experienced in January. The notice explains that the high bills are a result of the poorly insulated homes constructed in Florida. That's strange? My poorly insulated home seems to retain the cool air from the air conditioning just fine during the summer. Are you sure the astronomical bill I'm now anticipating isn't the result of a money-grubbing public utility company that is constantly seeking the state government's approval to jack up their already high rates even more? No, couldn't be that!

Although, I do accept some responsibility for my pending bill. I am a true Floridian now. I freak out when the temperature drops below 40, and God forbid it stay there for more than 48 hours. I was the first one to crank the heat up, and burn the gas fireplace for hours on hours in a vain attempt to recreate the 70-degree environment that I've grown accustomed to. Soon enough, I'll be that woman wearing a sweater in July when it's in the 90's!

Bedtime Report

I believe a bedtime report is a bit overdue. As you'll recall, we're experimenting with the room assignments in our house just a bit. Jax slept in Baylor's room all last week on an air mattress to test whether the boys were compatible as roommates. All in all, the boys handled the merge relatively well. As one might assume, Baylor's excitement about having his brother sleepover prevented him from falling asleep in a timely manner.

Most nights, we'd put Jax to bed first, and once he was soundly asleep, Anh and I would place Baylor in his crib for the night. Seeing that his brother was already sleeping discouraged any ideas of late night playtime. The real problem with the experiment didn't hit until morning when both boys would bound out of their shared bedroom at some pre-dawn hour eager to wreak havoc on the entire house.

Prior to the merge, Jax was the only early riser. However, since he's not really a morning person, he would simply lounge on the couch watching cartoons, and I considered it completely safe for him to be up unsupervised. Baylor is quite the opposite. More often than not, he'll sleep in, but once up, it's full speed ahead. So, if the boys are going to continue to share a room, I best accept that my days are going to be starting earlier. That means my caffeine consumption is sure to increase!

On Sunday, I thought the boys might be exhausted from their altered schedules so I suggested that Jax sleep in his own room for a night. Actually, what I said to him was, "Jax, you can pick where you want to sleep tonight. If you want to sleep in Baylor's room, you can. But, if you want to sleep in your bed, that's okay too. It's up to you." Jax's response," I want to sleep in Aunt Nguyen's room!" Ummm...Well...that wasn't really one of the options. Somehow, he convinced Aunt Nguyen to go along with the sleepover and that's where he's crashed for the last 2 nights. Although, last night, he did try to convince me that it was my turn to host him in "Mommy & Daddy's Room." Yeah right, kid! I'm no sucker like Aunt Nguyen.

So, it looks like we'll be bed shopping soon because I think the boys have proven that they're compatible roommates. Now, the debate over furniture begins...queen bed, bunk beds, or another set of twins? What to do? What to do?

School Pride

While we're discussing schools, let's briefly touch on the topic of school pride. Anh experienced a bit of it this past weekend when his beloved University of Kansas Jayhawks narrowly defeated the K-State Wildcats in basketball. I'm not really a basketball enthusiast, but even I enjoyed watching the game. It was a nail-biter! To celebrate the victory, Jax proudly sported his Jayhawk jersey on Sunday when we went shopping for golf clubs, Anh's very overdue anniversary gift. Year 6 called for a gift of iron. Aren't I clever?!?

As soon as the boys entered the store, a golf pro spotted them and rushed over. Turns out Anh and Jax weren't the only Jayhawk fans there that day. The golf pro is also a KU alum with a lot of school pride. After a round of introductions, the pro loudly exclaimed, "Jaxon you just made my day! Seeing you in that jersey made my day!" He went on to ask Jax, "Are you going to go to KU too?" Jax shook his head and said, "No." Of course, the golf pro was confused and asked, "Where are you going to go then?" Then, my wise-beyond-his-years son answered, "Wherever my mommy tells me to." Good answer, son! Good answer! Anh went on to explain that more than likely meant the University of Georgia. Sounds like Anh has accepted the inevitable too.

Decisions, Decisions

Today, I accompanied Jax and his classmates on a field trip to the Catholic elementary school. While that may sound like a boring field trip, I assure you it was quite an adventure. Carpooling from one campus to the other in the moms' mini vans and extra large SUVs wasn't cool enough for these kids. Nope, they were treated to a private trolley ride through our historic district. The monsoon that decided to travel through our area this morning only added to the experience. Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it was raining heavily at times.
The kids didn't seem to mind the lack of a windshield or windows that would have protected us from the elements. So, I did my best to pretend that I felt the same enthusiasm, but the whole time, I was really thinking, "Mother Nature seriously has it in for me!" Once we arrived at the elementary school campus, the kids were partnered up with a kindergartner who would serve as their "buddy" for the day. While the kids enjoyed a sing-a-long with the music teacher in the lunch room and an introduction to P.E. with the coach in the gym, the parents were treated to a tour of the school. This, you see, was the real purpose of the field trip.
With our children graduating from preschool in a few short months, the school is eager to recruit us for next year's kindergarten class. The school is one of three that we are considering, so I was interested to hear their sales pitch. I had some concerns about the age of the facilities, but seeing the newly renovated classrooms convinced me that the school deserved a spot on our short list. The teachers seem to genuinely care for their students, and of course, I appreciate that Jax and Baylor will be able to learn about their faith during the week rather than in Sunday school.
For me, lesson plans and extra-curricular opportunities weigh heavily on our decision for the boys. For Jax, it's about fun and friends. Since he made a new "buddy" during the visit and had fun singing and running around, he was sold. As a result, I may be too. The registration period has begun, and the school typically has a waiting list. So, I guess we better decide soon.

It was good to discover that I'm not alone in my struggle to make a choice. Every mom I talked to seems to be mentally weighing the pros & cons just like me. You'd think we were deciding on college as opposed to kindergarten! I guess it's a sign that we care & want the best for our children or that we're all completely neurotic! Probably a little of both.
