Spreading the Holiday Cheer

We don't have the luxury of a beautiful sleigh or flying reindeer, so we climbed aboard a Southwest jet and headed West to Kansas City, spreading our holiday cheer they whole way. Well, except Baylor. He wasn't feeling the holiday joy after missing his nap, and as a result, took on the role of Grinch. He was rather convincing!

As a quick side note, I must commend Southwest Airlines on not following the greedy pack. They don't charge an additional fee for checked bags which makes things a heck of a lot cheaper when you're traveling with kids who inevitably need everything under the sun. As if that wasn't enough, they also provide play areas within the terminal for restless children. Thank you, Southwest!

Our first two nights were actually spent in Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas and our dear friends, Jim & Allison. Our boys were thrilled to be visiting their boys: Alex (6), Parker (2), and Finn (1). Let's just say there was no shortage of testosterone or adrenaline during that 48 hours! The scene was chaotic, but also immensely entertaining. I wouldn't change a thing! It was late by the time we made it to the house on Thursday night. So we made things easy on ourselves and stayed in. As parents, we were able to relax and enjoy an evening of conversation while the boys entertained each other. Baylor made himself right at home in the basement. With 3 young boys, there was no shortage of toys to play with!
On Friday, we met up with Doug & Halie for lunch at one of our favorite sandwich joints, Yello Sub. The company only made the food better. Although, I must say that the visit was entirely too short. We barely had a chance to congratulate them on their recent wedding before it felt like we were rushing out the door. Oh well. Maybe that will lure them South sooner as opposed to later.

Before leaving on Saturday morning, I made a valient effort to take a group photo. As anyone who's ever tried this knows, it's no small feat! Asking five children overflowing with energy & excitement to sit together and remain still for even a few seconds, is pretty much asking the impossible.
This first shot turned out to be the best, in my opinion.
In the second shot, Alex & Finn's hug turned into some sort of chokehold.Which resulted in an absent Finn for shot 3.Okay, shot 4 is cute too! Except, Baylor is trying to steal the limelight from Jax.
After snapping a few pics, we raced out the door to Alex's basketball game. I'm not exaggerating when I say "raced." It's bad to be late when you're one of the star players, and your dad is the coach! Oops!
Alex's #1 fan, Parker #2 Fan, Finn
And, of course, no visit to Lawrence would be complete without a few pictures on campus. So we took the long way out of town, via campus, to pose with some Jayhawks...
and take a walk down memory lane.

Anh explained to Jax that this was where he had gone to college and asked Jax whether he wanted to go to school there one day and be a Jayhawk. Jax's response, "No, I think I will go to kindergarten." Good thinking, son! You've got to walk before you can run.Anh, not willing to accept that we probably have two future Gators on our hands, explained that Jax could go to KU after kindergarten. However, Jax still wasn't interested. In fact, the second time Anh asked whether Jax wanted to go to KU, Jax said, "No, it's cold. Can we go?" Awww! Anh's dreams were shattered. Don't worry, dear, I bet if you take Jax for a tour of campus in the Spring or Fall, he'd be more willing to commit.
Our next stop was to see the Davorens. It hadn't been all that long since their visit to our house in October. So, the kids were one big happy gang, picking up where they left off only weeks before. They exchanged Christmas presents and played into the night under the watchful eye of a babysitter. Yes, I said babysitter. The parents' gift was a night on the Plaza under the holiday lights. It was the perfect setting for economy stimulating, also known as Christmas shopping
!We returned home to discover our kids snug like bugs in a rug. Why sleep in a bed when you can share a sleeping bag on the floor? On Sunday, we met up with another group of friends, the med school gang. It's been a few years since we've seen most of them. So, we had never met some of the younger kids. Talk about a blast! The kids were so entertaining. They played so well together, but there were two distinct teams, the boys & the girls. Not much mingling either, but I suspect that will change in the future.

Speaking of future couplings, meet Baylor's future wife, Anne. Isn't she precious?! Oh, and it's not that there is a shortage of cute daughters within our circle of friends. It's just that Jax has already been paired with Anne's older sister, Ellen. So, it only makes since that Baylor & Anne pair up too. I hope the kids don't mind that we've taken the liberty of planning their lives.

With the sun setting on our beautiful weekend, we prepared to make the long trek home. You couldn't ask for a better weekend. We celebrated the holiday season with our best friends. There is no better gift that we could have given ourselves. I say we make it a family tradition!

Overbooked

Wow! We've been super busy over the last few days, and the schedule for the remainder of the week is looking just as packed. I guess that's the new "norm" for December. It's hard to complain about the inevitable exhaustion when it's a result of good times with great friends.

Last Thursday, we flew off to Kansas City where we saw almost all of our Midwestern friends. Of course, we couldn't see everyone in a mere 4 days, but sure did try! Going back to Kansas is always guaranteed fun. Because of that, I think we'll always consider it "home." Kansas is where we started our life as a family, and even though we moved away, we left a bit of our hearts with all of the wonderful friends we made during our years there.

After an extended weekend, we said our good-byes and left behind the freezing temperatures to return to balmy Florida. We arrived just in time to host John & Misti, our good friends from Wichita, for one night before they took off to celebrate their 10-year anniversary in the Bahamas. It was such a quick visit, but we were able to spend a night on the town with them enjoying dinner, drinks, and the beautiful Christmas lights illuminating our historic district.

Today, we did our best to return to our normal routines, but normal doesn't mean times are any less hectic. I guess that's just the way families operate now...full speed ahead!

Arg!!!

Ahoy, matie! I'm going to back-track just a bit so I can share some cute pictures of the kids from Pirate Fest 2009. It was a beautiful Fall day, except with summer time temperatures. Actually, it was pretty funny to see most of the crowd decked out in their Fall fashions. They looked good, but hot! We went the more sensible route and opted for t-shirts & shorts.
Hudson & Hayden joined us for the festivities, and as usual, Hudson was happy just to be a part of the fun. He didn't mind being strapped in his stroller. Baylor wasn't as thrilled with the arrangement.
Baylor didn't like watching from the sidelines as Jax & Hayden performed death-defying feats on the trampolines. He wanted to get in on the action! Soon, buddy. Your big brother was only 2 the first time he "jumped like Spiderman." You've still got a few months before I'll let you take that leap.
They made it look so easy! Something tells me it's not. One of these days, I'll give it a shot too.

Hudson got his adrenaline rush in a more traditional way, the swings. Again, Baylor wasn't happy to settle for this safer alternative. He didn't want to participate in "little kid" activities, but he was happy to eat most of Hudson's snacks while he waited for us to move on the next activity.

Even seeing big brother Jax on the swings wasn't enough to convince Baylor to take part. Oh well. His loss!
Our final stop was the only part of the day that Baylor truly enjoyed. Yummy frozen yogurt never disappoints. The girl behind the counter even treated Baylor to his own mini cup topped with a raspberry. Boy, did he feel special!

This picture just cracks me up! Jax looks like he just a bite of heaven!
Jay really didn't understand what all the fuss was about, but he seemed thrilled to get a break from the heat.
And, Hudson was excited to get a break from the stroller. All in all, it was a great Fall day. If only Mother Nature had picked up her copy of the memo.

Stumped

Yesterday, I received this funny email from Aunt Glenda & Uncle Robert in Texas:

I already knew I was dumber than 5th graders...but now it's the preschoolers???

A preschool test for you:

Which way is the bus below traveling? To left or to the right?

Can't make up your mind?

Look carefully at the picture again.

Still don't know?

Preschoolers all over the United States were shown this picture and asked the same question. Ninety percent of the children gave this answer,

"The bus is traveling to the left."

When asked, "Why do you think the bus is traveling to the left?" they answered...

"Because you can't see the door to get on the bus."

Wow! Pretty smart especially for preschoolers! I must admit I was stumped. So I thought, "I wonder how Jax would answer?" Well...Jax believes the bus is traveling to the right. In his defense, he doesn't ride the bus!

Gobble Gobble Gobble

Thanksgiving 2009 was a blast! Anh and I hosted the family and did our best to prepare an appropriate feast. Wednesday night, we kicked off the fun with a birthday party for Grandma. We won't reveal her age. It's bad enough that we're posting pics of everyone sans makeup, and it's clear we didn't bother to do much with our hair either. Don't kill me, Grandma!
It wouldn't be a party without yummy treats! In addition to the beautiful cake, we nibbled on an impressive array of appetizers. I did my best to recreate the crab salad in wonton crisps and bacon-wrapped dates that Anh and I enjoyed at our recent blind dinner. Both dishes turned out well and seemed to be crowd pleasers. Plus, Aunt Nguyen prepared some wonderfully delicious chicken satay skewers to serve along side my rendition of patatas bravas. The cake was the grand finale. Yum!After Wednesday's "warm-up," we were all ready to move on to bigger things...like a juicy 13 lb bird! It may look burnt in this picture, but I assure you it was really a beautiful mahogany. I used an Ina Garten recipe, and it did not disappoint.
Luckily, I had plenty of help in the kitchen this year. Aunt Nguyen prepared a gourmet foccacia dressing complete with sausage and mushroom medley and tackled making the gravy. Even Aunt Kelly got in on the action. Her contribution was honey infused cornbread muffins. Delicious! Next year, I'm going to pull Grandfather off the sidelines and put him to work. He's become quite skilled in the kitchen over the past couple of years and could definitely contribute to the fun.Anh took on the role of wine steward. Here he is serving Jax a lovely bottle of sparkling grape juice. Jax assured me that it was from an excellent year.As always, Jax continued to give his aunts a hard time. Here he is pretending he doesn't want to pose with Aunt Kelly. At least, I think he's pretending. It is Aunt Kelly, after all. I certainly wouldn't want to pose with her. Just kidding! I wonder where Jax gets it?This was a rare moment actually captured on film. Jax was excited to eat, and it wasn't chicken with sauce on it (aka sesame chicken).

We stuffed ourselves silly, but everyone saved room for pie. This Thanksgiving, Aunt Nguyen made her first attempt at pie baking, and I have to give her credit for a job well done. Both the traditional apple pie a la mode and pumpkin pie crowned with whipped topping & praline glazed pecans were delicious!
You couldn't ask for a better ending to a wonderful day spent with family. I think that's the secret ingredient to any memorable holiday meal, family. We may be crazy, but we love each other!

Things That Go Bump in the Night

I'm certainly not trying to gloss over Thanksgiving with this entry. We had a great holiday weekend with our family, and of course, I have some stories and pictures to share. However, I'll have to save that info for another day because we have much more dramatic news to share...

Baylor has probably earned his first scar! Before anyone starts to worry, he's fine. Within five minutes of the accident, Baylor was his usual happy & mischievous self. You'd never know that he was a trauma patient only minutes before. Unfortunately, the adults that attended to him took a bit longer to recover from the scare. Until that very moment, I never knew the true power of lollipops and cartoons on your iPhone. Those two things can make any situation better!
What happened? Well, Baylor had a nasty run-in with a stocking holder, a heavy star-shaped holder to be exact. I knew the dangling decorative stockings would attract his attention, but I didn't think he was tall enough to reach them. Wrong! Very, very WRONG! Crash!!! Baylor took a direct hit right between the eyes. It wasn't pretty. Blood was gushing, and I was panicking. Thank goodness we have a surgeon in the house.
Instead of the emergency room, we headed for the master bathroom. Anh keeps some medical supplies on hand for emergencies, and last night, Dermabond was the tool of choice. Basically, it's an alternative to stitches. Anh simply "glued" Baylor's laceration closed. The gash isn't terribly big, but it is deep. Plus, the area is swollen and bruised. My fingers are crossed that it won't scar. Time will tell.
Ultimately, the injury is minor. The damage could have been much, much worse. It's probably needless to say, but as soon as we exited the trauma bay (aka the bathroom), I promptly relocated the stockings to the stair railings...no stocking holders necessary. Maybe we'll bring them out next year or maybe not.
