A Walking Tour

Are you ready for a whirlwind? On Saturday, Kelly took us on a walking tour of the city, and we covered a lot of ground! Our first stop was SoHo. We checked out a few stores and strolled through the Dean & Deluca market. Did you know that there are only 5 Dean & Deluca markets in the United States? I have now been to 4 of them (New York, D.C., Kansas City & St. Helena) ! It's not necessarily something I set out to do, but now I feel like I must one day visit the 5th location in Charlotte.

As Anh & I strolled through the marketplace admiring the jaw-dropping assortment of goodies, a pastry chef stopped us and asked, "Are you two married?" We smiled and nodded, unsure of why she was asking because she looked really excited about our response. She asked with a big smile, "Were you on 'A Wedding Story?' You look just like a couple they featured?" She seemed so sad to learn that we weren't reality TV stars. She actually looked at us like she suspected we were fibbing to her and that we were actually on the show. Shoot...I wish!

Next stop, brunch at L'Ecole, the student restaurant at The French Culinary Institute. The food and service were absolutely super. I would never have guessed that students are responsible for the entire operation. I guess performance could vary by semester though.Every single dish we sampled was delicious, but we especially enjoyed Anh's appetizer, Steak Tartare accented with a quail egg.My Croque Madame wasn't too shabby either. After brunch, we made our way to the subway station. We were off to Central Park. Talk about an oasis in the middle of concrete jungle!Thousands of tulips in bloom. We made our way to world famous Tavern on the Green and enjoyed a few midday cocktails on the patio. It just oozes charm! With our thirst quenched, we headed back into the park.We could have spent the entire day there, but after a few hours, we decided to venture out to explore a different type of beauty, the lobby of The Plaza Hotel. We weren't the only with this idea. It was almost as packed as Central Park.Next, 5th Avenue shopping! Our only purchases were some souvenirs for the boys at FAO Schwarz. No, we didn't buy the piano from "Big." Although, it was for sale, only $250K. What a steal! We made our way towards Rockefeller Center. The ice rink has been replaced with an outdoor cafe. We'll have to make a trip back during the winter to check out the holiday displays and festivities.Times Square was next on the route. It's like Vegas, tacky yet beautiful in it's own way. You can see the New Year's ball in the picture below. I was surprised by how small it looks in person. Yes, I realize it's still massive, just dwarfed by surroundings.By this point in the journey, our feet were aching. All we wanted to do was sit down and relax a bit so we made our way to Kelly's old office where we were able to put our feet up. I can see why she liked that job! Not only are the views absolutely amazing, the office seems like a pretty fun place to work. Oh well, her new opportunity has it's perks too.The lounge area overlooks the Hudson River. A couple of co-workers actually saw the US Airways plane land in the river. Crazy!Back on the ground, we headed for home and dinner at Las Ramblas. It's a teeny tiny little tapas bar. I couldn't have asked for a better ending to our day.

Comparing Apples to Oranges

Now, I'm even more confused by the overwhelming number of New Yorkers that relocate to Florida. The 2 states have absolutely nothing in common, except for a high cost of living. Although, by New York standards, Florida is a definitely a bargain. Not all New Yorkers are eager to relocate to the Sunshine State either. One guy actually told me, when he learned I was visiting from Florida, "Florida. People go there to die." Good to know, right?

That sort of NY love or "pride" is everywhere though. As soon as we stepped off the plane at LaGuardia, Anh & I knew we were in for an adventure. You instantly feel the city's pulse, a vibe or energy that is so unique, it's indescribable. Oh, and contrary to what you might expect, New Yorkers are actually quite polite. As we all piled onto the airport terminal bus, a stranger stood and offered me his seat, definitely a courtesy I wasn't expecting. Our cab driver was equally hospitable, eager to offer us advice on navigating the city and opinions on where to eat.

Our first stop, the Greenwich Village/West Village area. Anh & I wandered the streets for a while, waiting for Kelly to get off work. By now, you know that we are big fans of our local "Pinkberry-esque" tart yogurt shop. So, you can imagine how excited I was to discover Red Mango (the "original" tart yogurt chain) and Pinkberry less than a block from Kelly's apartment. Bring on the free samples!

The winner is...Red Mango! It's creamy texture and soft consistency combined with a slightly less tart flavor made the perfect combination. Sooooooo good!
We took a window seat and enjoyed a little people-watching. Within a matter of minutes, Anh and I figured out the necessary wardrobe changes that we would need to implement if we were going to blend in with the young NY "hipsters."

(1) No hair washing or brushing. Girls, simply wad that rat's nest of hair on top of your head in a makeshift bun. The more stray pieces the better.
(2) Throw out the rules on wearing colors that compliment each other & instead combine colors that in no way shape or form seem like they would ever go together. If you're able to combine insanely busy patterns, even better!
(3) Wear skinny jeans tucked into your knee boots or, better yet, wear leggings/pantyhose as pants with little ankle boots.
(4) Do not ever hang up your clothes. Piling them on the floor in a huge heap is necessary to obtain the insanely wrinkled effect that is all the rage.
(5) And last, but not least...Never, ever take off your sunglasses or ipod earphones.

Needless to say, Anh & I did NOT fit the mold for the neighborhood. We must not have stood out as total tourists though because more than once someone asked us for directions.

After the yogurt-fix, we made our way to Kelly's place. She lives on a quiet little side street that may seem familiar to you because TV and movie crews film there regularly.Hence, the note that we found on Kelly's door. I'm not sure whether you can read the small print. The letter invites the resident to contact a location scout if they are interested in allowing a crew to use their apartment for filming during the production of Jennifer Aniston's and Gerard Butler's new movie, "Bounty Hunter."Okay, the note wasn't actually on Kelly's door. She lives in the basement apartment! I don't think anyone is shoving Jennifer Aniston into a basement. The note was actually on the door of an awesome townhouse up the street. At least, Kelly can look forward to more celebrity sightings. By the way, I forgot to take a picture of Kelly's living room. She does have one...a kitchen too! Her place was actually larger than I expected.

Speaking of celebrity sightings though, Anh and I happened to see a couple while we were there. No truly big stars, just a couple of D-listers. Truthfully, even that might be a stretch. Anyway, we crossed paths with an actor that played a bartender/love interest for the character Brooke on "One Tree Hill," and we saw Jill Zarin from "Real Housewives of New York" on Bravo. Now, you know the sort of quality television programming that we watch!

Getting back to Day 1, we were eager to sample some famous NYC pizza. So, we headed to a little place close to Kelly's apartment, John's Pizza. The food was absolutely delicious. We all shared a salad, meatball sub, and pizza.I should have taken a picture of the sub because that was everyone's favorite, but there just wasn't time. It looked so good that we attacked it as soon as the plate hit the table!Dessert was cupcakes from The Magnolia Bakery. It was featured in the "Sex And The City" movie which has made it a booming success. Sadly, we were all kind of disappointed. The cupcakes are beautiful, but that's about all I can say. After wandering the cute tree-lined streets of the West Village admiring the window displays for the various stores and cafes, we decided to call it a night. We were going to need a good night's sleep. We had a lot of ground to cover on Day 2. Stay tuned for pictures from our walking tour!

Change of Heart

Stop the real estate roller coaster! I want to get off! Seriously! I thought the ride had come to an end, but evidently, I'm stuck on this thing & going for another loop. In my last housing update, I shared the news of us making yet another offer on a home only to have the builder counter with an amount we weren't willing to consider. End of negotiations. Dead deal. Time to move along.

Well, I guess the builder had a change of heart or maybe I should say he finally decided to join the rest us of us in this thing I like to call reality. Either way, the builder contacted our realtor and asked her to inform us that he is now willing to accept our offer. Oh grand & sunny day!

That's all fine and dandy, Mr. Builder, but I'm not even sure that Anh & I are still interested in your house. You see, at this point, we clearly have real estate ADD. We're like little children that aren't on our meds. When a deal doesn't work out, we just move right along to the next opportunity. Trust me, there's plenty out there.

I really don't get emotionally attached to properties anymore, especially not ridiculously overpriced ones. There are plenty of those out there too. Ain't nothin' that special about yours! I'm done putting myself through the wringer. You either take what we offer or you don't.

Unfortunately for this builder, he was the last in a long line of fools that was unwilling to accept our fair market offer because people just won't let go of the distorted figure they believe their houses are worth. When he said no, like so many others before him, I finally entertained the idea of custom building. Anh & I scoped out 2 lots that would be perfect for us and developed a plan of action to build our home.

So you see, Mr. Builder, now you've got real competition. It's your perfectly nice house vs. a potential dream home. It's a match too close to call right now. There are definitely positives and negatives to both. Buying his house is definitely the easier option, but when have Anh & I ever really chosen the easy road. We seem to like inflicting pain upon ourselves. Will the trend continue? I seriously have no idea, at this point, but I'll be sure to let you know when we figure something out.

Big Mistake

It's free lesson month at World Golf Village. Since Jax loves golf, I thought it would be a fun way to spend the afternoon. Things didn't work out though.

Listen up, golf "pros!" When the next "Tiger Woods" walks through your door looking for a lesson, you don't turn him away because he isn't 9 years old. Big mistake! Huge mistake! Lucky for them, my kid is easily amused. Practicing his putt on the pro shop putting green was enough to make him happy.

Shrimp Festival

We spent Saturday at the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival on Amelia Island. Hundreds of artists had their work on display. Plus, there was a fun, interactive Kid Zone, but the shrimp took center stage, obviously. To steal a line from Forrest Gump, "Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it." Actually, there was so much more. One booth was selling shrimp flavored ice cream. Say it with me now..."EWWWWWW!!!!!" We walked right by that one.
Our friends, Jay & Lisa, met up with us which meant that the boys got to hang out with their friends, Hayden & Hudson...always a good thing. Like usual, Hudson was completely content and accepted that he was just along for the ride in his stroller.Baylor was not as cooperative. He played a long for a bit, but eventually Baylor demanded to walk like the big kids.Even though it was the Shrimp Festival, most people were actually dressed like pirates. I guess dressing up like a prawn just isn't cool. Jax wore his pirate tee and then gathered some accessories along the way. Here's Hudson giving us his best, "Arrrrg!"Throughout the day, we encountered some interesting creatures. First, we ran into the Geico Gecko. Then, we came across some visiting horseshoe and hermit crabs, courtesy of The University of Georgia Marine Extension. Jax really enjoyed getting up close and personal with them. He even let one of the horseshoe crabs pinch his fingers. Surprisingly, it doesn't hurt. They only look scary. Our last animal encounter involved "ponies." I use the term "ponies" loosely because these horses were small, but looked really old. I mean, 1 stop from the glue factory-old. The kids seemed oblivious though.
With that, we headed home because our bellies were full and our wallets were light. Both are signs of a good day.
