With Hurricane Irene well to our North, we were rewarded with some amazing late Summer weather, and it was impossible to resist the urge to spend the weekend lounging on the beach. Well, some of us lounged. Others made the most of the gentle, rolling waves that had replaced the violent crashing ones were experiencing days before.

At first, Jaxon and Baylor were both showing off their boogie-boarding skills, but then, Jaxon decided it was time to move on to bigger & better water sports like surfing! Actually, a surfing lesson courtesy of our good friend Stephan was the primary purpose of the outing. Stephan has been offering to teach us the basics since last year, but I was hesitant to allow Jaxon the opportunity because I wasn't convinced he was a strong enough swimmer to battle the waves. Stephan assured me that we'd take things slow and introduce Jaxon to the sport in the nice, gentle shallow waters close to shore. Seeing Stephan's 8-year old son, Luke, with his board was what finally convinced me Jaxon is ready to start this surfing adventure. Luke started surfing when he was 5!
Stephan thought it would be best to start Jaxon out on a longboard because it would provide better stability. Jaxon was thrilled to finally be learning to surf, and I was doing my best not to ruin his experience as scenes from Jaws flashed through my mind!
Anh was on hand to help Jaxon paddle out into the surf, but Jaxon pretty much took it from there!
Jax made surfing look easy as he effortlessly rode his first wave ashore! Aren't you supposed to fall a time or two before you get the hang of it?
Jaxon didn't get that memo! He glided across the ocean's surface with ease proving with each wave that I had deprived him of 12-months worth of practice which would delay the date that he can turn Pro!

Seriously, the kid seemed like a natural! He spent a couple hours in the water and only called it a day due to the afternoon thunderstorm that rolled in on us. The joy radiated from Jaxon's body as he caught wave after wave, and that lead me to our local surf shop within a matter of days. Jaxon is now the proud owner of his very own surfboard, and I can only hope the investment will lead to a lifetime of smiles!
